After Effects features summary (October 2023)

Next-Generation Rotoscoping with enhanced Roto Brush

Next-Gen Roto Brush, powered by a brand-new AI model, extracts objects from footage faster and more accurately than ever and requires fewer corrections. Refine your results for a beautiful composite, even when tracking objects that overlap or working with hard-to-mask footage, such as hair and transparencies.

OpenColorIO workflow enhancements

After Effects now has the OCIO Look Transform and OCIO CDL Transform as effects under the Color Correction category that use OpenColorIO to process color. You don't need to enable OpenColorIO color management in the project to use these effects.

OCIO Look Transform

Apply a Look transform or its inverse to a layer or composition.

OCIO CDL Transform

Apply CDL transform, or it's inverse to a layer or composition.

New scripting hooks for text and font manipulation

You can now use a new set of scripting hooks for text and font manipulation. These new hooks are intended to match in scripting what is available in After Effects UI.

In addition to extending the TextDocument object, there are two brand-new objects:

  • Fonts Object: The Fonts Object provides information about the current font environment on your device. It will allow you to retrieve all the available fonts and iterate them.
  • Font Object: The Font Object provides information about a specific font and the font technology used, helping disambiguate when multiple fonts sharing the same Postscript name are installed on the system.
The Apply Variable Fonts with Controls dialog appears when you run the sample demo script in After Effects.

Download the demo script that displays design axes for variable fonts and applies animation controls to a selected Text layer. Download it and run the script inside After Effects.

Second source layer in CC Composite

The CC Composite effect has an enhanced ability to specify a second source layer, allowing for efficient and effective compositing operations. While CC Composite could previously only composite a layer on top of itself, now, using the Top Layer dropdown menu, you have the flexibility to choose another layer, even one with a 3D model.

The CC Composite effect is highlighted with the Top Layer dropdown menu open and a layer – 3d-model-sample.glb selected.
Use the Top Layer option in the CC Composite effect to specify any layer in the composition as the top layer.

Additional updates

New support for HEVC and H264 hardware acceleration on Intel Discrete Graphics Cards

After Effects now supports H/W decoding and encoding H264/HEVC files on Intel Discrete Graphics (Intel Arc) cards, further boosting the app's performance. Learn more about Media Capabilities Supported by Intel Hardware.

Hardware acceleration for R3D on Windows

As part of the latest improvements, we have added GPU hardware decode acceleration for RED's R3D raw format on Windows (with GPU acceleration already shipping for macOS). GPU support works for NVIDIA and AMD GPUs with 6 GB or more of GPU memory.
