Install rollback and Shared Technologies | Windows

When you install Photoshop or Premiere Elements, the Status changes to "Rolling back action," and the application is uninstalled.

The installation of Photoshop Elements or Adobe Premiere Elements can fail with one of the following errors:

"The wizard was interrupted before Adobe Photoshop Elements could be installed. Below mentioned application has failed to install: Shared Technologies."

"The Adobe Premiere Elements installation wizard was interrupted while installing Shared Technologies."

"The installation process has encountered an error while installing Shared Technologies."

Disable conflicting software

Quit Adobe Bridge

Depending on whether you have other Adobe applications installed, it's possible that you have Adobe Bridge running as a background process.

  1. Check the system tray (lower-right corner of the screen next to the clock) for an Adobe Bridge icon.


  2. If present, right-click the icon and choose Exit Adobe Bridge.
  3. Open the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) to verify that Adobe Bridge.exe is not listed under Processes.

Disable Auto-Analyzer 

If you have a previous version of Elements installed, the Auto-Analyzer from Elements Organizer may be running in the background.

  1. Open Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Montitor (Mac)

  2. Find ElementsAutoAnalyzer.exe (Windows) in the Processes tab or ElementsAutoAnalyzer (Mac) and end it.

Disable antivirus and firewalls

If you are using Norton antivirus, make sure that the scanning is off while the Elements installation is running.

If you are using McAfee (VirusScan Enterprise 8.7.0.i or 8.8), do the following:

  1. Open the main properties screen, and under the Access Protection tab, select the Anti-virus Maximum Protection option under Categories. Deselect the Prevent Alteration Of All The Extensions Registration option.
  2. Select Common Standard Protection under Categories and deselect the Protect Mozilla & Firefox Files And Settings option.
  3. Install the McAfee antivirus in Standard Protection Mode and not in Maximum Protection Mode.

Disable backup software

If you have Crashplan/Backup software installed on your system, disable or uninstall it and then install Elements. You can enable or reinstall the crashplan/backup software after Elements is installed without errors.

Uninstall and Reinstall Adobe AIR

Ensure all installation components are available

Install from the desktop

Note: Skip this task if you purchased downloadable software.

  1. If you are installing from DVD or any external device, try the desktop installation.
  2. Close all applications.
  3. Create a folder, such as C:/PSEInstaller/. Do not create the folder on your desktop.
  4. Insert your Photoshop Elements or Adobe Premiere Elements installation DVD-ROM into your computer's DVD drive or the external device.
  5. Choose Start > My Computer (Windows XP) or Start > Computer (Windows Vista/Windows 7).
  6. Right-click your DVD drive or the external device and choose Explore.
  7. Choose Edit > Select All.
  8. Drag the selected items onto the folder that you created in step 2. Wait for the copying process to finish. (If an error message appears during the copying process, then contact Adobe Customer Service for a replacement installation DVD-ROM. To contact Adobe Customer Service in your region, go to Select your region from the menu at the top of the page, and then click Contact Us.)
  9. When the copying process is complete, eject the DVD-ROM.
  10. Open the folder containing the installation files (see step 7), and double-click Setup.exe to start the installer.
  11. If the installer finishes without errors, delete the folder that you created in Step 2.

Check the Elements STI installer folder components

If you downloaded the installaiton files, open the Elements folder and check for a folder named "ElementsSTIInstaller".

If the folder is present, open it and make sure the following components are present:

  • Deploy folder
  • Packages folder
  • Payloads folder
  • Resources folder
  • Set-up.exe file

If any of the components are missing, redownload and extract again.

Recreate Damaged Files

Archive the OOBE folder

  1. Navigate to the OOBE folder

    • Windows: C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\Adobe\OOBE
    • Mac OS: /Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE folder
    NOTE: Files in the above paths are hidden. To reveal them, use the following: 
  2. Rename the OOBE folder to OOBE.bak

    • Windows: Right-click the OOBE folder and select Rename
    • Mac OS: Select the folder and then press the Return/Enter key to rename the folder.
  3. Reinstall your Elements product.

Rename the Cache.db file

Occasionally, information in this file can conflict with a Photoshop Elements installation. The install log could mention issues with AFL.dll.

  1. Navigate to the following folder:

    • Windows: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe PCD\cache
    • Mac OS: //Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PCD/cache
  2. Rename cache.db to cache.old.

NOTE: Renaming this file will remove the licensing information from all Adobe products installed on this computer. When you next launch other Adobe applications, you will be asked to enter the serial number again.

Check the installation log for errors

If no error is returned during an install rollback, you can check the installation log for a more detailed explanation as to why the install failed. Use the Adobe Support Advisor (ASA) to analyze the installation log file. Check your installation path

If you are using a downloaded installer, or running the installation from the hard drive, the Shared Technologies can fail because of the installation path. You may see the following in the log:

[FATAL] Setup - Launch Path is too long. Please run the installer from some other location. 

Copy the installation files to a folder at the root of the drive, such as C:\PSEInstaller\, and rerun the installation. An application installation path must be 260 characters or less. Please review: Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces
