Welcome to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5! This document contains updated product information, feature notes, and troubleshooting tips not covered in the Lightroom documentation.

Installation notes

If you have a previous version of Lightroom on your computer, or a trial version, you do not need to remove it before installing Lightroom 5.

To install your software, do one of the following:

64-bit installation notes

Windows: The Lightroom installer contains both 32- and 64-bit versions of the application.

Mac OX: Lightroom 5 is available only as a 64-bit application.

Upgrade notes

• To update a Lightroom 1, Lightroom 2, Lightroom 3, Lightroom 4, or Lightroom 5 Beta catalog, launch Lightroom 5 and select and upgrade your previous Lightroom catalog. See Upgrade a catalog from an earlier version of Lightroom in Lightroom 5 Help.
• Upgrading a catalog to Lightroom 5 does not erase or remove the previous Lightroom catalog. If you want to try the Lightroom 5 trial by upgrading your existing catalog, you can always return to an earlier version of Lightroom and continue using your previous catalog.

• (Windows) Upgrading a library from Photoshop Elements 6 through Photoshop Elements 11 requires that Photoshop Elements be installed on the computer at the time of upgrade.
• (Mac OS) Upgrading a library from Photoshop Elements 9 through Photoshop Elements 11 requires that Photoshop Elements be installed on the computer at the time of upgrade.
• If you attempt to upgrade the same Lightroom catalog more than once, Lightroom informs you of the location of the previously upgraded catalog.

Known issues

• Full Screen mode does not show the next image in your selection. This occurs only when you have selected a series of images before entering Full Screen mode.
• Video playback is not supported in Full Screen mode.
• There is no error message informing that offline photos and videos are not exported to slideshows.
• When you play a slideshow in the Slideshow module, the slide after a video clip is often not shown.
• Custom slideshow templates default to 480×270 on export. This affects custom slideshow templates created in previous versions of Lightroom.
• The slideshow appears as a black screen occasionally. This occurs only when a video file is chosen as the first slide.
• You cannot apply star ratings while previewing or viewing a slideshow.
• Deleting a book in the Book module can cause another book to disappear.
• XMP metadata changes are not automatically written to file when the original file is offline.
• Canon cameras are not detected when using tethered capture in Windows 8.
• Offline photos go missing from Lightroom when moving folder of images to a different volume.
• GPS metadata on videos created on an Apple iPhone is not imported.
• Basic metadata is not imported with video files. This occurs only when imported directly from the camera. As a workaround, copy the files from camera to your hard drive and then import them into Lightroom.
• When using the Merge to HDR feature with Photoshop, the resulting HDR image contains metadata from the last selected photo.
• Photos adjusted using Process Version 2003 (PV2003) incorrectly display a "Post Crop Vignette: Paint Overlay" History step. Selecting a subsequent history state can reset existing settings that follow that state in the History panel. This reset cannot be undone, effectively deleting any settings that have been applied after the selected history state. This occurs only with images adjusted in PV2003.
• Images exported at less than one-third their original size may not retain Output Sharpening and Noise Reduction settings.

• DNG
• PNG
• Raw (See Camera Raw for a full list of raw file support.)
• Common DSLR video formats, including MOV, MPG, AVI, and AVCHD (MTS and M2TS only)

Lightroom does not support:

• PSD files saved without a composite image (saved without the Maximize Compatibility setting)
• Files larger than 65,000 pixels per side or 512 megapixels total

Working with Lightroom 5 and Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw

Lightroom and Photoshop Camera Raw share image-processing technology to ensure consistent and compatible results across applications that support raw processing. These applications include Lightroom, Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, and Premiere Elements.

Photoshop Camera Raw

To ensure compatibility with Lightroom 5 Develop module settings, Adobe applications must be updated with the Camera Raw 6.1 or later plug-in. Photoshop users can update the Camera Raw plug-in automatically by choosing Help > Updates.

Sharing Lightroom settings with Camera Raw

By default, Lightroom Develop module settings are stored in the Lightroom database. To ensure that Camera Raw can view Lightroom Develop settings, the settings must be written to the file's XMP metadata. This metadata is stored in an XMP sidecar file (imagename.xmp) in the path of the proprietary raw files, or stored directly within DNG files. To update images with the latest Develop settings, go to the Library module and select the group of target images. Press Ctrl+S (Windows) or Command+S (Mac OS) to save the settings to the XMP metadata block. See Metadata basics and actions in Lightroom Help.

Viewing Lightroom settings in Camera Raw

Before working with Lightroom and Camera Raw, set the Camera Raw preference to Save Image Settings In Sidecar ".XMP" Files. By default, Camera Raw displays the image adjustments exactly as performed in the Lightroom Develop module.

Viewing Camera Raw settings in Lightroom

Raw files edited by previous versions of Camera Raw maintain their previous appearance when imported into Lightroom as long as the Camera Raw preference is set to Save Image Settings In Sidecar ".XMP" Files. To update files edited in Camera Raw after they have been imported into Lightroom, choose Metadata > Read Metadata From Files in the Lightroom Library module. Additional notes on Camera Raw and Lightroom

Camera Raw reads only the current settings for the primary image in the Lightroom catalog. Virtual copy adjustments and snapshot adjustments are not available in Camera Raw.
