Acrobat crashes in a dual-monitor setup on Windows

Acrobat intermittently crashes after installing the May 2020 update. Using a dual-monitor setup is one of the reasons for the crash.

How it happens:

  1. Connect a secondary monitor to your computer for a dual-monitor setup.

  2. Open a few PDFs on the secondary monitor.

  3. Put the computer on Sleep mode.

  4. Disconnect the secondary monitor, and wake the computer. Acrobat crashes.

To fix the problem, follow the workaround below.

Workaround: Disable the merged title bar feature if it is enabled using the bMergeMenuBar registry key

  1. Quit Acrobat application if it's already running.

  2. In Start > Search, type RegEdit and press Enter. The Registry Editor is displayed.

  3. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\(version)\FeatureLockdown\

For example, the path for Acrobat is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\DC\FeatureLockdown\

  4. Under FeatureLockdown, create a key of type DWORD and name it bMergeMenuBar; the key may not be present by default. Set the value of the bMergeMenuBar key to 0 (zero):

    Key: bMergeMenuBar

    Data type: REG_DWORD

    Value: 0

  5. Close the Registry Editor.
