Troubleshooting & help
Download & install
Character Animator is installed via the Creative Cloud apps catalog or desktop app, and is available as part of an All Apps plan. You’ll need to sign in with your Adobe ID and password to complete the download. For more information, including how to install older versions or check for updates, see Download your creative cloud apps.
If a Preview or Beta version of Character Animator is currently installed, Character Animator will not appear as an update, but instead as a separate app to install. If the Beta version is no longer needed, uninstall it from the Creative Cloud app. Earlier Preview versions of Character Animator are uninstalled when the corresponding version of After Effects that it came with is also uninstalled.
When Character Animator is installed, Adobe Media Encoder is also installed to easily render movies of your scenes. After Effects no longer automatically installs Character Animator, so install it separately if needed.
Even though Character Animator is only available via All Apps plan, Preview and Beta versions of Character Animator (including those available as part of a Single App plan of After Effects) can still be used.
Existing projects and puppet files created with the Beta version of Character Animator can be opened in Character Animator. These files are not removed when the Beta version of Character Animator is uninstalled.
For solutions to a "failed to install" error, see Error: "Failed to install" Creative Cloud desktop app. To resolve other download, installation, and update issues, see this download and install troubleshooting guide.
You can install Character Animator and other Creative Cloud apps on up to two computers. If you want to install it on a third computer, you need to deactivate it on one of your previous machines. Learn more about activating and deactivating Creative Cloud apps.
If you cancel your membership, you still have access to Creative Cloud member free benefits and any files you saved to your device. You won't have access to apps or most services and your cloud storage will be reduced to 2 GB. Learn how to Cancel your Creative Cloud membership and understand the Adobe subscription terms.
If you structure and name the layers of your Photoshop or Illustrator files correctly, Character Animator auto-assigns tags to each feature. It then auto-rigs your puppet for you. Learn how to properly structure and name your layers to use the auto-rigging feature.
You can directly export a scene from Character Animator to a movie format via Adobe Media Encoder. The default movie format is H.264. For more information, see Exporting your Character Animator projects.
If you assign several keyboard triggers, it can be difficult to remember which keys to use for various behaviors. To see assigned trigger keys, select the puppet and open the Triggers panel (choose Window > Triggers) if the puppet uses the Triggers behavior, or choose Puppet > Show Obsolete Trigger Keys if the puppet uses the obsolete Keyboard Triggers behavior. Learn more about using keyboard triggers with your puppet.
