In the 2014 release of Illustrator CC, when you open an artwork file, if a missing font is detected, the Adobe Fonts library is checked for availability of the missing font. If available on the Adobe Fonts website, you can quickly sync the fonts to your computer, to restore the appearance of your Illustrator artwork.

The enhanced Find/Replace Font dialog

The Find/Replace Font dialog has been enhanced to provide more information and do more with a modern interface.  

Activation in progress

Indicates a missing font is activating from the Adobe Fonts library.

Status

Displays the current action being performed.

Activate checkbox

Select the checkbox to activate the missing font.

Activate Fonts

Select the button to activate missing fonts from the Adobe Fonts website to the local computer.

Select the flyout menu, and select the checkboxes to filter the list of displayed fonts.

Find missing fonts using Adobe Fonts

Important: For this feature to work, you must do the following:

  • Sign into the Creative Cloud app.
  • Enable Font Sync in the Creative Cloud app (Creative Cloud app > Preferences > Fonts tab > Sync On/Off option).

  1. Open an artwork file that contains Text elements. If a Text element uses a font that is not available on your local computer, the text is highlighted in pink.

  2. The Missing Fonts dialog displays a list of missing fonts. A spinning wheel against the font name indicates that a check for availability in the Adobe Fonts library is in progress. 

    • A selected checkbox against the font name indicates that the font is available in the Adobe Fonts library. To activate these fonts, select Activate Fonts.
    • An empty checkbox against the font name indicates that the font isn't available on the Adobe Fonts
      website. To find and substitute fonts, select Replace Fonts.

  3. (Optional) In the Missing Fonts dialog, select Activate Fonts to inspect the list of missing fonts more closely, and do any one of the following:

    • Select checkboxes for missing fonts in the Fonts in Document list, and select Activate Fonts.
    • Use the Replace With Font From the dropdown, and substitute any fonts unavailable on the Adobe Fonts website with other fonts.

    Use the Find Font dialog to either activate missing fonts or substitute them with other fonts available in the document or computer.

  4. In the Missing Fonts dialog, click Close.

    When the missing fonts have been synced to your computer, the Creative Cloud app displays a notification indicating the number of the fonts (or the name of a single font) downloaded. The document is updated, and Text elements are rendered in the correct fonts.

Substituted fonts preference

When text in an Illustrator document uses a font that is not available on your computer, the text is rendered in with a substitute font, and the content is highlighted in pink.

  • The preference to highlight a substituted font is now available in the Preferences dialog (Ctrl/Cmd + K > Type tab > Highlight Substituted Fonts checkbox).
  • The preference is switched ON, by default.
  • This setting is now Illustrator-specific, and is applicable to all files opened.

 Prior to this release, the Highlight Substituted Fonts were available in the Document Setup dialog and were a file-specific setting. From the 2014 release of Illustrator CC, this option is an application-level setting.
