January 2018 and October 2017 releases of Premiere Pro CC (versions 12.0.1 and 12.0)

The January 2018 (12.0.1) and October 2017 (12.0) releases of Premiere Pro roll out exciting new features for filmmakers, YouTubers, videographers, and designers. Read on for a quick introduction to the list of new features and enhancements.

Updates to Add media cache expiration policies

By default, Premiere Pro does not automatically delete cache files. Now, if you want to delete cache files, you have to set the preferences in Edit > Preferences > Media Cache.

In this release, before deleting media cache files, Premiere Pro displays a message indicating the files that are going to be deleted.


There is no change in the Premiere Pro functionality. In this release, the enhancement is the message that clearly indicates the files being removed.

Variable Frame Rate (VFR) support

Variable Frame Rate is a video compression term that refers to the format of videos where the frame rate changes actively during video playback. Most videos created using mobile devices (such as iOS and Android), and e-learning applications (such as Camtasia, ScreenFlow, or Twitch) are of VFR format.

Detection of VFR footage

You can now detect whether the selected footage is VFR or not. Select the footage, and then click File > Get Properties for > Selection. Premiere Pro indicates if it detects VFR footage.

Improved audio sync with VFR footage

You can now incorporate variable frame footage from devices such as mobile phones and the DJI Phantom without having to manually adjust the audio-video sync.

Select a VFR clip in the Project panel or the Source Monitor, and click Master Clip Effect in the Effect Controls panel.

Here you can toggle between the following options:

  • Preserve Audio Sync - This option decodes the source so that the audio and video is in sync. To accomplish this sync, the decoder adds or drops video frames. This may result in less smooth motion in the video. This is the default for all VFR sources with audio.
  • Smooth Video Motion - This option decodes all the available frames in the source and does not make any effort to maintain AV sync. This results in smoother motion in the video. You can choose this setting if you are doing motion graphics work and care more about getting all the available video frames. If Premiere Pro does not detect any audio, this option becomes the default option.

Limitations with VFR support

  • If you plan to use proxy, consolidate, or transcode workflows, it is better to transcode VFR material to a constant frame rate before editing.
  • If you have manually synced VFR footage in previous versions of Premiere Pro, you need to resync that footage when opening the project in Premiere Pro 12.0.1 or later versions.

Toggle multi-cam in source monitor for active camera to fill screen

You can now see the selected camera angle full screen in the Source monitor when making editorial choices on multicam clips. This ability was already present in the Program monitor; now it is available in the Source monitor as well.

Support for more video footage formats

Premiere Pro can now import the following video footage formats:

  • Footage captured by the ARRI ALEXA Mini camera in MXF/ARRIRAW format (ARRIRAW codec in an MXF container file). In addition, MXF supports sync audio.  
  • HEVC (also known as H.265) codec footage in a QuickTime (.MOV) container, such as produced by an iPhone or iPad with iOS 11 or a DJI Phantom 4 drone.

In addition, Premiere Pro performance (on suitable hardware) for DPX playback is much improved as Premiere Pro now uses asynchronous decoding of a DPX frame sequence.

Option to keep clips vertically aligned as you move them across tracks

You can now hold down the Shift key while dragging clips across the timeline. This action changes the drag/drop operation so that the clips only move vertically without any accidental horizontal movement.

Improved options to solo audio track in source monitor

You no longer have to spend time re-setting the solo selection for every clip that is loaded in the Source Monitor. If you have set any of your audio channels to solo, then Premiere Pro remembers that setting even when you load another clip in the Source Monitor (only if both clips have the same number of audio channels). 

Ability to make existing project into a shared project alias

You can now import an existing project file as a shared project. If you select the Import as Shared Project option, a shared project alias is created linking to the project targeted for import.

If you want to import multiple projects at the same time, you can select Do the same for all projects. This option enables you to import multiple projects as a shared project with one click of a button.

Preview VR360 clips on HMD

If you are running Premiere Pro on a Mac machine that supports VR and HTC Vive, you can now edit VR360 clips and preview them in a Head-Mounted Display (HMD).

Feature limitations

  • If you start Premiere Pro before SteamVR is running, Premiere Pro hangs.
  • If you remove the HMD and let it go to sleep state, Premiere Pro takes a long time or may be unable to wake up the HMD. Use the hand controllers often to restore the HMD video preview.
  • A low-level exception occurs if you attempt to preview an audio only clip when the Adobe Immersive Environment is enabled.

Option to match frame sets in point

In previous releases of Premiere Pro, if you match frame to a clip that had in/out points already, Premiere Pro preserves and displays them.

Now, you can set up Premiere Pro (Edit > Preferences > Timeline > Match frame sets in point) so that when you match frame, you have an in point on the frame you matched and there is no out point.

Sub-sequence improvements

There is now a new Make subsequence from in to out option in the keyboard shortcuts. This creates a subsequence and ignores track targeting. Instead, all tracks in the sequence are grabbed for the new subsequence.  Subsequence also loads into the Source Monitor.

Align and distribute graphic layers

You can now select multiple layers within a graphic clip and align or distribute them in the Essential Graphics Panel.

You can align layers by their top edges, vertical centers, bottom edges, left edges, horizontal centers, or right edges. 

You can distribute layers horizontally or vertically.

When you have only one layer selected, using the align buttons aligns the shape or text layer to the video frame. When you have two or more layers selected, the buttons align the layers in relation to each other. 

Distribute commands are disabled (greyed out) until three or more layers are selected.

Support faux styles for fonts

The Essential Graphics Panel now includes support for faux styles: Faux Bold, Faux Italic, All Caps, Small Caps, Superscript, and Subscript.

New features in Adobe Premiere Pro (version 12.0)

The October 2017 Release of Premiere Pro (version 12.0) comes with a host of exciting new features. 

With the Multiple Open Projects workflow, you can easily edit between multiple projects simultaneously. This release also introduces responsive design and improved end-to-end workflows for graphics, a complete end-to-end immersive editing experience for both video and audio when editing 360/VR content, and continues to expand on best-in-class support for industry standard formats and captioning requirements.

Multiple Open Projects

New in the October 2017 release 

Premiere Pro allows you to open, access, and work in multiple projects simultaneously. It also allows editors working on series or episodic content to jump between and across episodes without repeatedly opening and closing individual projects. When you are working on feature films, multiple open projects helps in the management of large productions - you can break-up a large production into individual projects per scene, instead of opening and closing multiple timelines by accessing individual scene timelines via a tab-based structure. You can also freely edit and copy portions of one project into another with ease.

Shared projects

New in the October 2017 release 

This feature helps an editing team in the same facility to work collaboratively on a single project simultaneously. Managed access throughout the project allows you to lock projects when they actively edit and provides read-only access to those who want to see their work but not allow them to make changes. Using shared projects, co-editors or editors and their assistants can access a single project simultaneously, thus enabling the ability to get more work done faster without concern for overwriting work.

Responsive Design - Time

New in the October 2017 release 

The Essential Graphics panel includes controls for Responsive Design for motion graphics creation. Responsive Design for Motion Graphics include time and position-based controls to make Motion Graphics respond intelligently to changes in duration, aspect ratio, and frame size.

With responsive design time-based controls, you can define segments of their graphics that preserve intro and outro animations, even when the overall duration of the graphic changes. Your graphics can adapt as your creative vision develops. You can also preserve intro and outro animations for motion graphics even when changing the overall duration of the graphic.

Responsive Design - Position

New in the October 2017 release

Position-based controls for Responsive Design allow you to define relationships between layers in a graphic with each other along with the video frame itself so that alterations to one automatically alters properties in the pinned layers/video frame.

Responsive Design position-based controls in Premiere Pro enable pinned graphic layers to automatically adapt to changes made to other layers or to the video frame itself – like changes to positioning or frame size. By applying specific Responsive Design designations for Position, your graphics automatically adapt when changing the length of your title or lower third, so nothing goes out of frame.

Editors wanting to work with dynamic, professional graphics, or graphics packages such as titles, lower 3rds, bumpers and closing credits, can access Motion Graphics templates created by talented professionals right in Adobe Stock through the Libraries panel in Premiere Pro. 

Immersive VR editing using head-mount display

New in the October 2017 release

Create smooth transitions, titles, graphics, and effects and navigate your VR timeline in a headmount display while still incorporating keyboard driven editing like trimming or adding markers. This helps you edit in an immersive, head-mount display environment such as an HTC Vive, Google Daydream VR, or Oculus Rift. In addition, you can shuttle playback, change orientation, and add markers all while in a head-mount display environment. The viewing of Virtual Reality content is an immersive experience – and with immersive VR editing capabilities in Premiere Pro, now editing VR can be too. This set of features enables editors to experience the immersive qualities of the content they are editing, review, and mark places that need finessing, all while wearing the same VR head-mounts as their audiences.

Immersive audio editing for VR

New in the October 2017 release

Edit VR content using audio based on orientation, which increases the immersive quality of VR content exponentially. The new functionality that is added enables audio by your orientation / position to not only be edited but also exported as ambisonic audio for VR enabled platforms such as YouTube and Facebook. Much like VR video in Premiere Pro, the audio is an explorable 360 representation. Expanding on the foundational VR workflow components Premiere Pro now offers immersive ambisonic audio to take the VR experience to the next level with positionally aware audio represented within the spherical video. 

Improvements to Essential Graphics workflows

Enhancements to the existing essential graphics panel include:

  • Ability to directly manipulate multiple graphic layers simultaneously in the program monitor.
  • Support for title rolls.
  • A new font menu that gives font previews in the menu, allows you to select favorites, with filtering and improved search options. This gives you more intuitive functionality when working with the Essential Graphics panel.
