How to handle the Preferences folder read-only error in DVA applications
Issue
On rare occasions, you may face any of the following issues:
- Premiere Pro or After Effects stops responding.
- Premiere Pro or After Effects seems to intermittently slow down.
- An error message is displayed about the Preferences folder being read-only.
- Premiere Pro or After Effects crashes while launching or opening.
- Premiere Pro or After Effects crashes while accessing files on your computer, such as during import or export.
Solution
Manually set the Preferences folder attributes to read-write. Follow the instructions to give read and write permissions to Adobe folders.
On Windows
Perform this procedure, once each for the following folders:
- C:\Program Files\Adobe
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe
- C:\ProgramData\Adobe
- C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe
- C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Premiere Pro\<version number> - for Premiere Pro.
- C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects\<version number> - for After Effects.

Displaying the hidden items -
Navigate to the folder using the paths given above.

In File Explorer, right-click the folder and choose Properties.

Click the Security tab, and then click Edit to set permissions.

In the Permissions dialog, select your user name. In the Permissions area, deselect the Deny checkbox. For example, for Premiere Pro:
Enabling permissions -
Click OK twice.

Launch the application.
On macOS
-
Open a new Finder window.

Hold down the Option key, click the Go menu on the toolbar at the top of the screen, and then choose Library. (Library is hidden unless you hold down the Option key.)

Locate and open the Application Support/Adobe/Premiere Pro folder.

Click the <version-number> folder, and press Command + I to get the Info window.

Verify that your user account is listed in the Sharing and Permissions section at the bottom of the Info window. Ensure that its Privilege is set to Read & Write.
Checking your privileges -
If your user account is not listed, follow these additional steps:
- Click the Lock icon at the bottom of the window.
- Provide your user credentials when prompted.
- Click the + button to add your user account.
- Click your user account and choose Select.
- Change the Privilege on your user account to Read & Write by clicking Read only, and changing it to Read & Write.
- Click the Lock icon to save the changes.

If your user account is already listed, but set to Read only, follow all the steps listed in Step 6, except steps c and d.

For After Effects, repeat steps 1-7 for this file path - [drive]/Users/[user]/Library/Preferences/Adobe/.
