Make selections with the Rectangular Marquee tool

Select the Rectangular Marquee tool (M) .

Use the Options bar to customize tool settings, like Add to Selection or Subtract from Selection, to get the selection you want. 

Draw the selection area.

• Rectangular: Drag over the area you want to select. 
• Square: Hold down the Shift key and drag diagonally in any direction.
  
• Draw from the center out: Hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) as you drag.
