Learn how to prototype interactive experiences using videos in Adobe XD.

You can choose a preset or custom playback option for your video, and define how other interactions work with it. As you explore the video playback options and interactions, check out some realistic prototyping examples involving videos.

Before you begin

Set a playback option

Set a playback option for your video
Set a playback option for video

After importing your video into XD, control when your video will play. Follow these steps to set a playback option:

  1. In Design mode, select the video on canvas.
  2. In the Video section of the Property Inspector, choose a preset:

Playback options and associated interactions

When you set a playback option for your video in Design mode, associated interactions are automatically set in Prototype mode.

Play on tap

When you choose Play on tap, Tap trigger is auto-set with the default action as Toggle Play/Pause.

Play automatically

When you choose Play automatically, Time trigger is auto-set with a delay of 0 seconds.

No playback

When you choose No playback, no interaction is created in Prototype mode.

Customize video playback

Choose Edit playback to customize playback
Choose Edit playback to customize playback

To customize video playback, in the Video section of the Property Inspector, select Edit playback.

When you select Edit playback, you automatically switch to Prototype mode.

In Prototype mode, opt for any of these customizations:

Choose one of these triggers: Time (set Delay to more than 0 s), Keys & Gamepad, or Voice.

Choose Time trigger with Delay set to more than 0 seconds
Choose Time trigger with Delay set to more than 0 s

Change the video playback action of Tap trigger from Toggle Play/Pause to Play or Pause.

Customize playback by choosing Tap trigger with Play or Pause as the action
Choose Tap trigger with Play or Pause as the action

You cannot set a video to play with a Drag trigger.

Use video playback with other interactions

Once you set a playback option for your video, explore wiring it with other interactions:

  • Set an End of Playback interaction for video to trigger an action after it plays.
  • Play video and multiple Lottie files at the same time.

To learn more about prototyping in XD, see Create interactive prototypes.

Understand interactions and video playback behavior

Your video stops or continues to play based on the interactions you set for other objects:

  • Video stops playing when actions other than Auto-Animate and Lottie playback are triggered.
  • If you want the video to continue playing when you hover or tap on other objects, use Auto-Animate as the action for Hover and Tap triggers.

Video and Time triggers

On any given artboard:

  • You can have multiple Time triggers in sequence based on their time delay.
  • You can set a video and multiple Lottie animations to play together after the same time delay. You can also set them to play together automatically (time delay set to 0 s).
  • If you set Time triggers with the same time delay on artboard, video, and Lottie, the priority is: artboard > video > Lottie.

Examples of prototyping

Now that you learned how to set a playback option for your video and wire it with other interactions, let's try some examples.

Download sample files

Example 1: Prototype maximize button for video

Learn how to prototype maximize button for video.

Ex 1-artboard 1

  1. In Design mode, import the Tip 1 video and place it on the artboard. Set it to Play on tap.
  2. Place the Maximize icon (given in the Icons section to the right of artboards) in the lower-right corner of the video.
  3. In Prototype mode, wire the Maximize icon to Ex 1-artboard 2, and set it to a Tap trigger with the Action Type as Auto-Animate.

Ex 1-artboard 2

  1. In Design mode, import the Tip 1 video and place it on the artboard (full screen video). Set it to Play on tap.
  2. Place the Minimize icon (given in the Icons section) in the lower-right corner of the video.
  3. In Prototype mode, wire the Minimize icon to Ex 1-artboard 1, and set it to a Tap trigger with the Action Type as Auto-Animate.

When you complete wiring the interactions, preview the prototype and check the interactions.

Example 2: Prototype playback

Learn how to play videos back to back in XD.

Ex 2-artboard 1

  1. In Design mode, import the Intro video and place it in the Introduction section. Set it to No playback.
  2. Import the Tip 1 and Tip 2 videos and place them in the Tips section. Set them to No playback.
  3. Place a copy of the Play button (given in the Icons section) on all the videos.
  4. In Prototype mode:
  • Wire the Play button on the Intro video to Ex 2-artboard 2.
  •  Wire the Play button on the Tip 1 video to Ex 2-artboard 3.
  • Wire the Play button on the Tip 2 video to Ex 2-artboard 4.

Set them all to a Tap trigger with Action Type as Transition.

Ex 2-artboard 2

  1. In Design mode, import the Intro video and place it above the Tips section. Set it to Play automatically.
  2. In Prototype mode, wire the video to Ex 2-artboard 3, and set it to an End of Playback trigger with Action Type as Transition.

Ex 2-artboard 3

  1. In Design mode, import the Tip 1 video and place it above the Tip 1 section. Set it to Play automatically.
  2. In Prototype mode, wire the video to Ex 2-artboard 4, and set it to an End of Playback trigger with Action Type as Transition.

Ex 2-artboard 4

  1. In Design mode, import the Tip 2 video and place it above the Tip 2 section. Set it to Play automatically.
  2. In Prototype mode, wire the video to Ex 2-artboard 1, and set it to an End of Playback trigger with Action Type as Transition.

When you complete wiring the interactions, preview the prototype and check the interactions.
