Learn how to use snapping features to align objects precisely with ruler guides and grids in Adobe InDesign.
Snapping helps align objects precisely by pulling them toward guides or grids when they come within a defined distance, the snap-to zone. The Snap to Guides command controls snapping to ruler guides and the baseline grid.
Objects snap to any visible ruler guides on any layer, so hide a layer’s guides to prevent snapping. Document and baseline grids can snap even when hidden and take precedence if both snapping options are allowed.
Turn on snapping to guides
Drag an object near a ruler guide until one or more of its edges come within the snap-to zone.
Release the pointer when the object snaps into alignment with the guide.
Adjust the snap-to zone
Select Edit > Preferences > Guides & Pasteboard (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Guides & Pasteboard (macOS).
In the Snap to Zone field, type a value in pixels to define how close an object must be to a guide before it snaps.
Select OK.

To temporarily disable snapping while dragging an object, hold down Ctrl (Windows) or Command (macOS). Release the key to re-activate snapping.
