Match audio channelization in Media Encoder

Learn how to match the source audio channel configuration during encoding in Adobe Media Encoder.

  Use new beta features

Match Audio Source support is now available for testing and feedback. Try it now in Media Encoder (beta).

When working with audio in video projects, it’s essential to preserve the original channel configuration to maintain the intended sound quality and balance. Whether your source audio is recorded in mono, stereo, or a more complex surround sound setup, the latest Adobe Media Encoder (Beta) offers flexible options that enable you to match the encoded file’s audio layout to the source, providing control over how channels are processed and exported.

The match source audio update in Adobe Media Encoder (Beta) provides the following capabilities:

  • Matches sample rate and channelization: Automatically aligns with the source audio configuration, whether stereo, 5.1, or 8-channel.
  • Format support: Works with QuickTime, HEVC, and H.264 (format-dependent), as well as Waveform Audio and MP3. MXF support is planned for a future release.
  • Fallback behavior: If the chosen format does not support the source channelization (for example, H.264 only supports mono, stereo, or 5.1), Media Encoder will default to the closest supported option.
  • Preserving all channels: To retain full channelization beyond 5.1, use a format that supports multi-channel audio, such as QuickTime.

You can either manually enable the match source controls in the Export Settings dialog box or create an encoding preset.

Enable match source controls in Export Settings

  1. Add video or audio files to the encoding queue.

  2. Select the text shown under Format, Preset, or Output File path in the item’s row within the Queue panel to open the Export Settings dialog box.

  3. Navigate to the Audio tab, and under the Basic Audio Settings section, enable the checkbox next to the Sample Rate dropdown to ensure the exported audio uses the same sample rate as the source.

  4. Enable channel matching by selecting the checkbox next to the Channels dropdown menu to automatically apply the source audio’s channel configuration to the export.

The Basic Audio Settings section is open and the checkbox next to the Sample Rate and Channels dropdown menus are selected.
Enable channel matching by checking the box next to Channels to apply the source configuration.

  5. Alternatively, you can also go to the Audio tab and select Match Source.

The Export Settings section is open and the Match Source button is selected.
Select Match Source to automatically set all options under Basic Audio Settings to Based on Source.

    Obs!
    • Matching the source audio properties may be limited by the selected output format. This can include restrictions on the bit rate, sample rate, or channel configuration.
    • Making changes in the Video section only will not match the audio-related settings. They are controlled only by Match Source in the Audio section.
  6. Select OK.

Create an encoding preset

By creating encoding presets with the match source audio options enabled in Adobe Media Encoder, you can make sure every export automatically uses the same sample rate and channel configuration as your original audio. This not only saves time by eliminating the need to adjust audio settings for each export, but also helps prevent mistakes like mismatched channels or incorrect sample rates.

  1. In the Preset Browser panel, use the Create Encoding Preset option to launch the Preset Settings dialog box.

  2. Go to the Audio tab and under the Basic Audio Settings section, enable the checkboxes next to the following options:

    • Sample Rate
    • Channels
The Basic Audio Settings section is open and the checkbox next to the Sample Rate and Channels dropdown menus are selected.
Check Sample Rate and Channels to match the export with the source audio.

  3. You can also open the Video tab and select the Match Source button under Basic Video Settings. This will set the following options in that section to display Based on Source:

    • Frame size (width and height)
    • Frame Rate
    • Field Order
    • Aspect ratio
The Basic Audio Settings section is open and the Match Source button is selected.
Select Match Source to automatically set all options under Basic Video Settings to Based on Source.

  4. Select OK.
