Learn how clipping masks hide parts of artwork using another shape, helping create clean designs that fit perfectly within boundaries.

A clipping mask is a vector object that decides what parts of your artwork are visible. Everything outside the shape gets hidden. A clipping mask consists of two key elements:

  • Clipping path: The shape that defines the visible area.
  • Masked objects: The artwork that is hidden outside the clipping path.

A clipping set is made up of a clipping path and masked objects. This set can include multiple objects, groups, or even entire layers.

Guidelines for creating clipping masks

  • Only vector objects can create clipping masks, but you can mask any type of artwork.
  • Masked objects move automatically into the clipping mask group in the Layers panel.
  • The first object in a layer or group becomes the clipping mask for all its sublayers or subgroups.
  • Fill and stroke are removed automatically when you convert an object to a clipping mask.
