Learn how to use lens-based oblique styling to slant and scale text while maintaining glyph height in Adobe InDesign.

Shatai replicates traditional lens distortion in typesetting, slanting characters as they are scaled horizontally, distinct from simple italic slant. This technique maintains vertical glyph height while adjusting magnification and angle from the center point, making it useful for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) typography, where oblique styles may not be available as dedicated fonts.

Apply Shatai when you need oblique character styling for CJK text that lacks italic or slanted font variants. This feature mimics traditional film-based typesetting, where optical lenses created slanted characters during plate-making. Use this technique for emphasis, stylistic variation, or matching historical typesetting conventions in print reproduction.

Select the text you want to slant using the Type (T) tool.

Select Type > Character.

Select the panel menu icon and then select Shatai.

In the Magnification field, enter a percentage value to control horizontal scaling. In traditional typesetting terms, 10% equals lens 1 magnification, and 40% equals lens 4.

From the Angle menu, select 30, 45, or 60 degrees to set the oblique angle.

Select Adjust Rotation to rotate glyphs so horizontal strokes remain horizontal in horizontal text and vertical strokes remain vertical in vertical text.

Select Adjust Tsume to apply Jidori character spacing adjustments.

Select OK.

After applying Shatai, you can fine-tune individual characters using the Character Rotation option in the Character panel. Enter positive values to rotate characters counterclockwise or negative values to rotate clockwise. This adjustment allows precise control when automated Shatai settings need refinement for specific glyphs or design requirements.
