Resolve missing fonts in desktop applications

Last updated on Nov 12, 2025

Learn how to fix missing font errors in Adobe desktop apps to ensure your text displays correctly and your design remains consistent.

Missing fonts

If you see a Missing Fonts message when opening a file in an Adobe desktop app, it means the document uses fonts that aren’t installed on your computer. The app replaces fonts you don't have with default fonts, which can change your design layout or appearance. To maintain design consistency, activate or replace the missing fonts before proceeding.

Fonts displayed are not available

Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator have built-in integration with Adobe Fonts (formerly Typekit). When you open a document containing unavailable fonts, the Missing Fonts dialog shows which fonts can be added through the Adobe Fonts service.

Note

You need an internet connection and must be signed in to the Creative Cloud desktop app to activate fonts

To activate missing fonts, follow the steps:

In the Missing Fonts dialog box, select the checkboxes next to the fonts you want to activate.

Select Add to sync the fonts to your computer.

The fonts apply automatically to your document.

If activation fails, you may see one of these messages:

Applications don’t support Adobe Fonts integration

Desktop applications without Adobe Fonts integration don't show missing font alerts. In these cases, missing fonts are replaced with default fonts.

You can browse or search for the missing fonts from the Adobe Fonts website and add them through the Creative Cloud desktop app. Restart the application to see the new fonts in the font menu.

You may need to restart the application after adding new fonts for them to appear in the font menu.
