Learn how to use Generative Expand for images to generate content that blends naturally with image edges.

Generative Expand for images in the Crop Image feature lets you expand an image beyond its original bounds.

On the left is an image showing a person crossing the road and the images area increased by dragging the cropping frame, and on the right is the expanded image.
Use Generative Expand for images to adapt your image to any aspect ratio without cropping.

Use the Selection   tool to select the image on the canvas.

In the Contextual Task Bar, select Crop Image   . A rectangular cropping frame with handles appears on top of the image.

You can also access Crop Image from the Quick Actions section of the Properties panel, the Control panel, the right-click menu, and the Object menu.

Drag the frame handles outward in any direction to increase the image area as needed. The increased area appears in purple.

  • Press Shift + Option (macOS) or Shift + Alt (Windows) to drag in all directions at the same time.
  • Enter the width and height in the Properties panel to get a precise area.

You can crop some parts of the image and expand the rest at the same time.

Select Generate in the Contextual Task Bar. When you do so, Generative Expand for images creates a copy of your original image and expands it with generated content:

  • Three variations of the output appear in the Properties panel. The first variation automatically appears on the canvas as a Generative Object, indicated by on its bounding box, and the original image disappears from the canvas.
  • A Generative Object group appears in the Layers panel. Your original image also appears as a hidden object in the Layers panel, and when unhidden, it reappears on the canvas behind the Generative Object.

In the Contextual Task Bar, use the arrows to preview the variations. Once you find the variation that best suits your design requirement, select Done.

You can manage the generated variations from the Properties panel or the Generation History panel. You can also copy the Generative Object with its linked variations or re-run Generative Expand for images.
