Illustrator GPU performance | Driver updates

View System Compatibility Report for GPU

If you are using an unsupported GPU driver, Illustrator displays a System Compatibilty Report dialog during the app launch mentioning the GPU driver incompatibilities. We recommend you to immediately fix this incompatibility by installing the latest GPU driver, otherwise you may face stability, performance, and data loss issues.

If due to any reason you are unable to update the driver, you can disable the display of this dialog. Go to Preferences > General and deselect the Show system compatibility issues at startup checkbox.

To export the contents of this report in a text file, click Export Report. To reopen the dialog, choose Help > System Compatibility Report.

Ensure that GPU Performance is enabled (Preferences > Performance).

Identify your GPU card chipset manufacturer

  1. Launch Illustrator.

  2. Open the Preferences panel (Press Ctrl+K or choose Edit > Preferences).

  3. In the GPU Performance tab, note the manufacturer listed under the GPU Details area.

  4. Use the procedure below to update the device driver for that specific manufacturer.

Update GPU device drivers

Important: This procedure guides you to update the device drivers for the video adapter being used. If your computer has multiple GPU cards from different manufacturers, update the drivers for each of the cards installed with your computer.

If you use a GPU card based on Intel chipset architecture, the manufacturer may not have the most up-to-date drivers available yet. To check for the latest drivers, follow the instructions available on the page: http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-033916.htm.

  1. Download the zip file appropriate to your computer setup from this link.
  2. Press the Windows + X keys together, and select Device Manager.
  3. If User Account Control prompts occur, grant the necessary permissions to continue.
  4. In the Device Manager console, expand the Display adapters section.
  5. Right-click the Intel graphics node, and then select Update Driver Software.
  6. Choose the option to browse your computer to find the required driver software.
  7. Click Have Disk, and then select the directory that contains the .zip file you downloaded in step 1.
  8. In the .zip file, located the Graphics folder and open it.
  9. Click Next. When you click Next, driver installation starts.
  10. If prompted, reboot your computer.
  1. Browse to the page: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us.
  2. Download and install the latest drivers for your GPU card.
  1. On your Windows computer, press Windows + R.
  2. Type devmgmt.msc, and then press Enter.
  3. In the Device Manager console, expand the node Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the GPU card you want to update the drivers for, and choose Update Driver Software.
  5. Follow the instructions to update the driver software, and then close the Device Manager console.
Note:

If you have any more AMD/ATI-based GPU cards installed, update them as well.

Issue: Errors or unexpected behavior when GPU Performance features are turned on

Some users are facing issues when GPU Performance features in Adobe Illustrator. Some issues are:

  • Rendered artwork appears jagged / black / white
  • Illustrator crashes
  • Documents appear in black and white color
  • You receive an error message that GPU Performance Features are not available in the document you are currently working on.

Solutions

Solution 1: Update GPU card software drivers

The GPU Performance features in Illustrator work best with the most recent, updated GPU card drivers. Refer to the KB article on updating device drivers: Illustrator GPU Performance | Driver Updates.

Solution 2: Start with a clean preferences file

  1. Close Illustrator, if it is running.
  2. Depending on which OS you use, navigate to the path:
    Mac OS: /Users/<user>/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator
    Windows: %appdata%\Adobe
  3. Rename the preferences folder:
Mac OS: Rename the folder 22.0.0 to 22.0.0_old
Windows: Rename the folder Adobe Illustrator 22 Settings to Adobe Illustrator 22 Settings_old
  4. Restart Illustrator and check if GPU Performance features are working as expected.

Solution 3: Ensure that your on-board GPU card is the default for all display activities

Cause: With laptops that have an on-board graphics card (integrated GPU) and an additional (add-on GPU), users are reporting that Adobe Illustrator does not pick the available add-on GPU. Illustrator defaults to the integrated GPU. When launched, Adobe Illustrator uses the same hardware that drives the laptop’s display. If your add-on GPU is not rendering the laptop’s display, Illustrator will use the integrated GPU.   Possible solutions: When you have an add-on GPU, to use GPU Performance features in Illustrator, ensure that the add-on GPU powers all the display-related functionality on your laptop.
  • Using your BIOS settings, ensure that the add-on GPU is used by default. Disable the on-board GPU, if possible.
  • In your Operating System settings, ensure that the add-on GPU is used as the default to drive all display functionality. For example, for NVIDIA GPUs, you can use the NVIDIA Control Panel to set a global option that ensures the default GPU used for all display functionality uses the NVIDIA hardware.
  • Use hardware device manager software to disable the on-board GPU. This causes the computer to default to the add-on GPU.

Important consideration: Using the add-on GPU device causes power consumption to rise and significantly reduce battery life while operating on battery power. This will reduce the period of time available for the laptop to function before needing to find a power source.

Solution 4: For times when GPU Performance Features stop working in a document

Possible causes: Illustrator may encounter an object or artwork in the document that causes the GPU to stop working for the document.     Possible solutions:
  • Click View > GPU Preview
  • Save the document and then close and reopen it.
