Introduction to headers

A header is a section at the top of each slide that improves the user experience by presenting essential information and consistent branding, such as logos, course titles, and slide numbers. It supports dynamic variables like learner names or dates for personalization, ensuring a tailored experience. Headers are responsive across devices and offer customizable styling options, including backgrounds, borders, and spacing, providing design flexibility. Incorporating headers strengthens branding and delivers a cohesive, professional look for your e-learning project.

Add a header

When you add a header, it is automatically added to all slides in the project by default. If your project initially has one slide and you add a header to it, the header will also appear on any new slides you add.

Note

Headers cannot be added on simulation slides.

  1. Select   from the left toolbar to add a new slide.

  2. Select Add branding components > and then select Header.

Customize the header

Customize the header to match your company branding by adding or replacing the logo, editing text blocks. You can also use variables to display information such as the learner's name and slide numbers.

  1. Expand the Alignment and Spacing section to add padding from the borders. Use the Content width slider or add the padding values manually. Use the Auto layout toggle to adjust the padding proportionately across devices. Learn more on alignment and spacing in Adobe Captivate.

  2. Expand the Appearance section and customize the header by applying a background, border, and shadow.

  3. Select a design option from the options available in the Design Options section to modify the styling and layout of the header.

  4. From the Components section in Visual Properties, add or remove components from the header, such as:

    • Company logo: Select this to add a brand logo in PNG or JPEG format. The logo image is scaled responsively based on the device view. The maximum permissible dimensions for the logo (desktop view) are 300x300px.

    • Company name: Select this to include the brand or company name as text.

    • Course title: Displays the course name.

    • Slide number: Show the slide number using the slide count variable.

    • Table of Contents: Enable this component to give learners quick access to different slides in the course. This setting is independent of the project's overall TOC and Playbar settings. For example, you can enable the TOC in the header while keeping it disabled at the project level or vice versa.

  5. Change the logo: Select the image in the header and apply filters, edit the image focus, or choose a different image from the Visual properties panel.

Use variables in a header.

Variables allow you to automate information in a header, such as course title, date, and current slide number. Learn more about using variables in Adobe Captivate.

  1. Select any text in the header.

  2. Enter $$ to view the variables dropdown.

  3. Use these variables to fetch the following information:

    • Course title: Use the LMS.CourseName variable to fetch the course title.
Add a Course title using variables in the header

    • Slide Number: Display the current slide number out of the total number of slides in the project using the ProjectSlideCount variable.
Use the project slide count variable to display current slide number

    • Date: Automatically include the date in a desired format from the list of system variables.

Match the appearance of the course title on all slides

After customizing the Course title, such as changing fonts, presets, font size, text color, or any other text property, you can apply these changes to all headers in the project. Your modifications will cascade to all course titles, resulting in a uniform look and feel across the project.

  1. Select the Course title component of the header.

  2. Select Project Properties from the right toolbar.

  3. Select the Flow title across slides toggle to have the same Course title across all headers.

Use the same title across all slides

    Note
    • Enabling the Flow title across slides option will not apply to slides where the course title has already been edited manually. Any subsequent changes to the course title will only update slides where the title was not previously modified, as well as any newly added slides.
    • When disabled, any changes to the Course title do not apply to the rest of the slides.

Delete a header

Right-click the header on the current slide and select Delete. This will remove the header from the selected slide only, while the headers on other slides will remain unchanged unless deleted manually. If you re-add the header, it will adopt the customizations of the existing header.
