Learn how to lock content in Adobe InDesign for exclusive editing in managed workflows, then release it for others to use.
Checking out content gives you exclusive editing control by placing a lock file (IDLK), preventing others from making changes. Checking in releases the lock and saves content for shared access.
Only content files can be checked out, not InDesign documents. Exporting a text or graphics frame automatically checks it in. Status icons indicate editing activity, and the Assignments panel shows who is working on each item.
Check out content
Select Edit > InCopy > Check Out.
If prompted to update the content with changes, select OK.
Check in content
Select the content in the layout.
Select Edit > InCopy > Check In.
You can also select the files in the Assignments panel and then select Check Out or Check In from the panel menu .
Avoid deleting lock files (IDLK) manually from the file system. Removing lock files while content is checked out can allow multiple users to edit simultaneously, resulting in lost work.
