Select the Rectangle Frame tool, Ellipse Frame tool, or Polygon Frame tool.
Learn how to create placeholder frames in Adobe InDesign and customize their size and polygon shape settings.
Placeholder frames help you set up layouts before adding final content and display an X to indicate they’re empty. Use Frame tools and configure settings to create containers for images or text, allowing you to build layouts in advance.
Create a placeholder frame
Drag to define the frame size.
Hold Shift while dragging to constrain the frame to equal width and height.
Hold Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) while dragging to draw from the center outward.
Configure polygon frame settings
Double-click the Polygon Frame tool to open the Polygon Settings dialog box.
Enter a value in Number of Sides to specify how many sides the polygon will have.
Enter a percentage in Star Inset to create star shapes.
0% creates regular polygons, higher values (40-50%) create longer, thinner points, and lower values (10-20%) create subtle points.
Select OK.
