Text characters missing in printed FrameMaker document or in PDF file

Issue

Some text characters are missing from an Adobe PDF file created from Adobe FrameMaker or from a FrameMaker document printed to a PostScript printer on Windows.

Solution

Do one or more of the following solutions:

Solution 1: Install the Microsoft Hotfix driver update.

Download the Microsoft Hotfix driver update from http://support.microsoft.com/?id=952909.

For more information regarding this solution, please refer to http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2008/07/hotfix_for_framemaker.html.

Solution 2: Change the print resolution to a lower setting

  1. Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Printers and Faxes, and select the printer you want to use (for example, Adobe PDF or a specific printer model).
  3. Choose File > Printing Preferences and click Advanced on the Layout tab.
  4. Choose Graphic/Print Quality, and select a lower setting than is currently selected from the Quality pull down menu (600 x 600 or lower is best for most printers).
  5. Click OK twice to close the Printing Preferences window.

Solution 3: Print the FrameMaker book to PostScript before generating a tagged PDF with Distiller.

  1. Open the FrameMaker book and choose File > Print.
  2. In the Print Document dialog box, select Generate Acrobat Data.
  3. Select Print to File, and then click Browse to specify a location for the PostScript file.
  4. Click Setup and make sure that Adobe PDF (Acrobat 6.x or 7.x) or Acrobat Distiller (Acrobat 5.x) is selected.
  5. Click Print. FrameMaker creates a PostScript file and saves it in the location you specified in step 3.
  6. Open Acrobat Distiller.
  7. Choose File > Open.
  8. Navigate to the PostScript file and click Open.

Note: If you have already tried this method, but have not tried to Save As PDF (choose File > Save As > Save As PDF), then try that method instead.

Solution 4: Reduce the amount of system fonts in the Windows font control panel or move extra fonts used by FrameMaker to FrameMaker's font folder.

The FrameMaker font folder is contained in the FrameMaker install directory (typically C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker 7.x\fminit\fonts\Adobe; where x is replace with your version). When fonts are located here they are only accessable from FrameMaker itself.

Note: Be especially careful not to remove system fonts. For a list of default fonts that come with Windows see document 326402, "TrueType fonts installed by Windows XP". For a list of fonts installed with FrameMaker 7.x see document 325333, "Included fonts (FrameMaker 6.0-7.2)".

Additional Information

If you have a large number of fonts, then FrameMaker will occasionally drop text from the resulting PDF when Windows font bitmap cache (fntcache.dat, located in \Windows\System32) is too large. Adobe is aware of this issue and is working to a more permananent solution.
