Learn how to apply and manage Flex Layout properties within Object Styles in InDesign to create consistent, responsive layouts for containers and child objects.
InDesign now supports Flex Layout properties within Object Styles, which allows you to define and reuse layout configurations consistently across your design. You can style both Flex Layout containers and Flex Layout children and create nested Flex Layouts for more complex designs.
Flex Layout container
You can configure Flex Layout properties directly in Object Styles. You can create an Object Style named Vertical Container that includes Flex Layout settings, and then apply it to any Flex container in your layout.
Example:
Use the Object Styles panel to enable Flex Layout and set properties like direction, alignment, and spacing. Once saved, apply this style to other containers for consistent layout behavior.
Flex Layout child
The same Flex Layout section in Object Styles can also define properties for Flex Layout children. This allows you to standardize child object behavior, such as fixed or flexible dimensions, within your layout.
Nested Flex Layout
You can nest Flex Layouts within each other. When a Flex Layout container includes other Flex Layout containers, both container and child properties apply. In these cases, width and height are governed by the Flex Layout Child section.
For proper layout behavior, ensure that both Width (W) and Height (H) values in the Flex Layout and Flex Layout Child sections match.
