Identify the font of text used in a raster image or outlined text, and convert it into live (editable) text.
Retype is a beta feature in Illustrator on desktop now available for testing and feedback.
With Retype in Illustrator, you can identify the fonts of static texts used in raster images and outlined texts, eliminating the need for guesswork. Once you identify the font of a text, edit it effortlessly.
- Retype supports Latin (English, French, German) and Japanese scripts only.
- On macOS 11, font identification from the image works fine. However, to edit the text, consider updating to macOS 12 or higher.
- You no longer need a GPU (graphics card) in your computer to match fonts or edit outlined text. However, a GPU is still required to edit text within images.

-
-
Select the word in the image or outlined text for which you want to get font suggestions. The Retype panel shows 10 matching fonts as suggestions, ordered by the closeness to the font of the selected word.
Font suggestions from both Adobe Fonts and system fonts are enabled by default. You can choose to turn off either of them by deselecting From Adobe Fonts or From your device respectively in Apply Filter .
-
If Retype fails to auto-detect a word in the image or outlined text, move the marquee and fit it around the undetected word to get font suggestions.
Use the marquee in Retype for undetected text.
Notă:- Use the marquee only if you don't see a dotted line around the word.
- Marquee works best on horizontally aligned single-font text.

Also, you can type in your own text in the Retype panel to preview it with the given font suggestions.
