Learn how to create custom patterns or apply predefined patterns to your artwork.

Create a custom pattern

Select the Rectangle tool from the toolbar to draw a rectangle shape or hold it to draw more live shapes using the Rounded Rectangle , Ellipse , Polygon , Shaper ,or, Star tool.

Select the artwork that you would like to create the pattern from, and then select Object > Pattern > Make.

In the bar below the Control Panel, select Save a Copy, Done, or Cancel.

When you create a new pattern, it’s added to the Swatches panel. When you edit an existing pattern, its definition in the Swatches panel is automatically updated.

Apply a predefined pattern from the swatch library

Select the artwork you want to apply a pattern to.

Select Window > Swatches to open the Swatches panel.

In the Swatches panel, select Swatch Library menu > Patterns and then choose a pattern library.

Select a pattern swatch from the library to apply it to the selected artwork.

Select Show Swatch Kinds menu > Show Pattern Swatches to display only patterns in the Swatches panel.
