Edit video using generated transcript

Learn how to edit your video by making changes directly in the transcript with Text-based editing.

The Text-based editing feature in Firefly video editor makes it easier to handle videos with a lot of speech, such as interviews, documentaries, or podcasts. Instead of searching through timelines or audio tracks for edits, you can edit the video by working directly with the transcript.

Create a new project and add a video file with dialogue to the timeline.

Select the Text-based editing   icon in the right panel.

The video with dialogue is added to the timeline and the Text-based editing icon is selected.
Select the Text-based editing icon to get the selected video with dialogue transcribed.

The Text-based editing panel displays the automatically generated transcript of the video.

Speaker labels will be assigned in the transcript depending on how many individuals are speaking.

Use the   icon to enable the following functions:

When you hover your cursor over the generated transcript, you get the following options:

  • Correct transcript: If the generated transcript doesn't match the dialogue, you can manually correct it.
  • Add text to timeline: Add the highlighted text as a new text layer in the timeline.
  • Assign speaker: Assign a speaker to the selected text, or add a new speaker if needed.
  • Delete: Delete the selected text. This will also remove the corresponding video frames from the timeline and create a split.
In the Text-based editing panel, a word is highlighted and the edit options such as Correct transcript, Add text to timeline, Assign speaker, and Delete.
Highlight text in the generated transcript to view and use the edit options.

You can also use the search option in the Text-based editing panel to find specific frames that contain a particular word from the dialogue.

The search bar is highlighted, and a word is entered to find all instances of it in the generated transcript.

Once you've finished editing using the generated text, download the final video.
