Manage Flex Layout conflicts in InDesign for flexible and adaptive layouts.

When the child and parent in a flex layout relationship cannot align on how to adjust the layout, conflicts can occur. InDesign uses auto-resolution logic to resolve them.

  • Fixed Layout with Fill Space child elements: If you change the Flex Layout to Auto size, a conflict occurs. InDesign’s auto-resolution will set all child elements to Fixed size.
  • Auto Layout with Fixed child elements: If a child element is changed to Fill Space, a conflict occurs. The parent Flex Layout will switch to Fixed size.
  • Wrap On with mixed sizes: If a child element’s size is changed to Fill while Wrap is on, the conflict will cause InDesign to turn Wrap off.

Using Text Frames in a Flex Layout

The Flex layout does not support auto-sizing text frames. If you place auto-sizing text in a Flex layout, the auto-sizing will turn off.

Using Images in a Flex Layout

When a graphic frame is inside a Flex Layout with its size set to Fill Space, it adopts the frame’s existing Fitting settings, ensuring the image scales appropriately within the container.
