File size
The file size of an image refers to its digital storage size, measured in kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), or gigabytes (GB). File size is directly proportional to the pixel dimensions of an image. Larger pixel dimensions allow for greater detail at a given print size but require more disk space and can slow down editing or printing. Therefore, balancing resolution and file size is essential to achieving quality and efficiency.
Factors affecting file size
- Pixel dimensions: More pixels mean larger files.
- File format: Compression methods vary across GIF, JPEG, PNG, and TIFF, resulting in different file sizes for the exact image dimensions.
- Color depth and layers: Higher bit-depth, multiple layers, and additional channels increase file size.
Photoshop limitations
Photoshop supports images up to 300,000 by 300,000 pixels. This limit defines the maximum print size and resolution possible within the application.
