Unable to open macro-enabled Microsoft Office files attached to a PDF

Starting with the August 2018 release of Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Reader, the following macro-enabled Office file extensions are permanently blocked due to security reasons:

  • MS Excel: .xlsm, .xlsb, .xlm, .xltm, .xla, .xlam,.xll
  • MS Word: .docm, .dotm, .docb
  • MS PowerPoint: .pptm, .potm, .ppam, .ppsm, .sldm
  • MS Access: .accde, .accdr

If you try to open a macro-enabled Office file attached to a PDF, you get the following error message:

"Adobe Acrobat cannot open the file attachment because your PDF file attachment settings do not allow this file type to be opened."

This is the expected behavior.
