Adjust color saturation in selected image areas
Use the Sponge tool to paint over specific regions and control color intensity without affecting the rest of the image.
The Sponge tool provides brush-based control over color saturation in targeted regions. Use this method when you need to intensify colors in a focal point or mute distracting elements without creating layer masks or selections. For adjusting saturation across your entire image or multiple discrete areas with precise control, use a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer instead.
When working in Grayscale mode, the Sponge toouse asts contrast by moving gray levels toward or away from middle gray, rather than affecting saturation.
Working on a duplicate layer preserves your original image and makes it easier to compare before-and-after results. For precise control, create a selection before using the Sponge tool to limit adjustments to specific areas.
Select and configure the Sponge tool
In the Options bar, select a brush tip and adjust Size and Hardness to control the affected area.
Choose Saturate from the Mode menu to intensify colors, or choose Desaturate to reduce color intensity.
Set the Flow value to control how quickly the saturation changes with each brush stroke. Lower values create gradual changes; higher values produce stronger effects.
Select the Vibrance checkbox to prevent fully saturated colors from clipping and to protect skin tones from oversaturation. Start with a low Flow value (20-30%) and build up the effect gradually. This approach gives you more control and helps avoid oversaturating or completely desaturating areas.
Apply the saturation adjustment
Paint over the areas you want to modify using smooth, overlapping strokes.
Release the mouse button between strokes to evaluate the results and avoid over-adjusting.
Switch between Saturate and Desaturate modes in the Options bar as needed to fine-tune different areas. The Sponge tool's effects accumulate with each stroke over the same area. Multiple passes create stronger adjustments, while single passes produce subtle changes. Review your work at 100% zoom to ensure natural-looking results.
For more comprehensive color adjustments affecting specific color ranges or multiple areas, explore the Hue/Saturation adjustment panel, which offers non-destructive editing with layer masks.
