Limitations while working with Illustrator
Resolve common fidelity and compatibility problems when copying Illustrator artwork into Photoshop.
When you copy content from Adobe Illustrator and paste it into Photoshop using the Layers option, certain properties and features may not transfer correctly due to differences in how the applications handle vector objects, text, effects, and layer structures.
After pasting Illustrator content as layers in Photoshop, you may notice text positioned incorrectly, effects missing from layers, blend modes displaying different visual results, shapes converted to paths instead of remaining editable, or layer structures reorganized compared to the original Illustrator document.
The following solutions address the most common compatibility issues, organized by category to help you quickly identify and resolve problems with your specific workflow.
General issues
Text layers with certain fonts shift position when pasted from Illustrator to Photoshop because the required font is not installed or activated on your system. For detailed instructions on managing fonts, see Activate fonts on your computer.
- Identify which fonts are missing in the pasted text layers
- Install the required fonts on your system
- Copy and paste the Illustrator content again
- Verify that text layers now appear in their correct positions
Effects and properties applied directly to the top-level layer in Illustrator do not transfer to Photoshop because Photoshop handles layer hierarchies differently.
- In Illustrator, create a new group or layer
- Move all document content, including the previous top-level layer, inside this new parent layer
- Select all content and copy it
- Paste into Photoshop using the Layers option
- Verify that effects now appear correctly on the nested layers
Blend mode issues
Rasterizing converts vector content to pixels, which limits editing flexibility but preserves visual appearance.
Blend modes on Illustrator's top-level layers map incorrectly because Photoshop uses the Pass Through blend mode for layer groups, which behaves differently from Illustrator's implementation.
- In Illustrator, create a new dummy layer at the top of the layer stack
- Move all existing document layers inside this new parent layer
- Copy the content with the new layer structure
- Paste into Photoshop using the Layers option
- Verify that blend modes now match the expected appearance
Objects in Illustrator with overlapping strokes using blend modes may show color differences when pasted to Photoshop because the blending mode mapping does not account for stroke overlap scenarios. No workaround is currently available for this limitation.
Layer structure and effects
Knockout groups, an Illustrator-specific feature, are not supported in Photoshop. When you paste objects with knockout group functionality, the knockout behavior is lost, and layers with knocked-out strokes are converted to paths or rasterized. No workaround is currently available for this limitation.
Layer structures change when pasting objects with group-level, subgroup-level, or sublayer-level effects because Photoshop expands these effects to maintain visual fidelity. The resulting structure matches what you would see in Illustrator if you chose Object > Expand Appearance on the group with effects applied. Visual and functional fidelity are preserved, though the layer organization differs.
- Paste your Illustrator content into Photoshop using the Layers option
- Review the layer structure in the Layers panel
- Reorganize layers manually if needed for your workflow
Shapes with effects or styles applied at the group, subgroup, or sublayer level are pasted as paths instead of editable shapes. This includes live shapes with drop shadows applied at the group level or shapes with multiple strokes. No workaround is currently available to preserve these as live shapes.
Strokes and paths
Paths created with the Paintbrush tool in Illustrator are pasted as pixel layers instead of shape layers. No workaround is currently available for this limitation.
Line miter properties used to cap strokes in Illustrator are not carried forward to Photoshop, resulting in visual differences at path corners where strokes meet. No workaround is currently available for this limitation.
Dash and gap stroke corners flip position when pasted because of coordinate system differences between the applications. For complex dashed patterns where position is critical, rasterizing in Illustrator before pasting ensures visual consistency.
- After pasting dashed strokes into Photoshop, select the affected layer
- Manually adjust stroke properties in the Properties panel if the stroke remains editable
- Alternatively, rasterize the stroke in Illustrator before copying to preserve the exact appearance
Text issues
Text with bullets or numbered lists is converted to outlined shape paths to maintain visual fidelity because Photoshop does not support these list formats the same way Illustrator does.To preserve editable text:Alternatively, accept the outlined shape paths for visual accuracy at the cost of text editability. This produces the same result as Illustrator's Type > Create Outlines command.
- In Illustrator, remove bullets or numbered lists from text objects before copying
- Copy the plain text and paste it into Photoshop as a text layer
- Format bullets or numbering manually in Photoshop using text layer properties
