Remove or replace backgrounds on multiple images

Last updated on 24 Sep 2025

Remove the backgrounds from images in bulk and replace them with another image or a colored background.

Before you begin:

Review the technical specifications and explore best practices to achieve optimal results with the Remove background preset workflow.

Select Production on the Firefly homepage.

Select the Remove background.

Select From device to upload multiple JPG, PNG, or TIFF files from a local device, or use Connect to storage to directly upload images from your cloud storage, such as Dropbox.

Under the Upload images, the Dropbox option is selected.
Choose the best method to upload images, whether they're stored locally or in the cloud.

To remove the backgrounds from all uploaded images and replace them with transparent backgrounds, enable the Transparent background option under Background variations.

Under the Background options section, the Remove background option is toggled on.
The Transparent background option will remove the background from all uploaded images.

To replace all backgrounds in a batch, enable Image backgrounds and upload the new background image from your local device or cloud.

Under the Replace background section, a background is uploaded from the device.
Upload the images you want to set as the new background, replacing the current one.

You can add multiple background images to replace the removed background, but make sure the longest side (width or height) of each image does not exceed 8190 pixels.

To replace all backgrounds in a batch with a solid color, select Color backgrounds, enter a HEX value, and then the      button.

In the Color background field, there is a color hex code added.
Create a uniform colored background for all uploaded images.

Tip

The count displayed below the Continue button shows a preview of the total outputs generated after background removal. This count number is calculated as the total of original images uploaded and the number of background variations selected.

Select Continue.

In the Final processing details dialog box, select the file types for the processed images. Choose from JPG, PNG, PSD, or any combination, and then select Process.

You'll get an email with a link to download all your images once the batch processing is complete.

The following images were processed using different background variations with Remove background.

PSD as output file type

When you choose PSD as the output file type, the processed file you'll receive will include:

  • One layer for the image and mask
  • One layer for each background color or image
  • One color decontamination layer to help refine edges
Photoshop is open and there is a masked layer with multiple background images as layers under it.
An example where the original image is in a masked layer, and uploaded background images are under it as separate layers.

For example, if you specify three solid colors and add a background image, the PSD file will contain six layers:

  • Layer 1: Color decontamination layer
  • Layer 2: Original masked object with the original masked object
  • Layer 3, 4, and 5: Three solid color backgrounds
  • Layer 6: Background image
