Use the Selection tool to select the text or its portion to which you want to apply a font. If you're going to select a font for later or only want to explore fonts, skip this step.
Learn how to find, preview, and apply local fonts and those from Adobe Fonts to stylize text in Adobe Illustrator.
Find and apply local or added fonts
Use the Your Fonts tab in the font browser to find, preview, and apply local fonts and those added from Adobe Fonts to your account:
Select Window > Type > Character to open the Character panel. Then, select the Set the font family dropdown to open the font browser.
You can also access the Set the font family dropdown from the Contextual Task Bar, the Character section in the Properties panel, and the Control panel. You can also find and apply fonts from Type > Font.
In the Your Fonts tab, explore the local fonts and those added from Adobe Fonts:
- Browse through the Recently used or Your fonts section. If needed, apply filters or quick filters to narrow the list.
- Type the font name in the Set the font family field.
Apply filters to find fonts by specific sources and font properties.
Preview a font to see if it matches your design needs:
- Find the preview of the sample text next to the font name. By default, the sample text is the text you selected on the canvas, and if you didn't select any text, it shows the word Sample. Change the sample text or text size, or turn it off, as needed.
- Hover over the font name to preview it on the selected text on the canvas.
To apply a font to the selected text on the canvas, select the font. If you select a font without selecting any text on the canvas, Illustrator automatically applies it to the next text object you add.
Discover more fonts from Adobe Fonts
Use the Discover More tab in the font browser to find and add more fonts from Adobe Fonts:
Select Window > Type > Character to open the Character panel. Then, select the Set the font family dropdown to open the font browser.
Switch to the Discover More tab. Browse through the Explore Styles, Trending fonts, New releases, or the Browse all Adobe Fonts section. If needed, apply filters or quick filters to narrow the list.
To add a font to your account, hover over the font name, select the Add icon, and wait until it turns into the Remove icon.

In the Your Fonts or Discover More tab of the font browser, find fonts similar to a font:
Select Window > Type > Character to open the Character panel. Then, select the Set the font family dropdown to open the font browser.
Hover over the font, and then select Show Similar Fonts .
