Sort and segment photos
Learn how to apply sorting and segmentation options to organize your photo grid by date, rating, or other criteria.
Sorting and segmentation help you organize and navigate large photo collections by arranging photos in meaningful ways and grouping them into visual sections.
Sort photos in the grid
Select Sort By from the menu.
In the Sort by screen that appears, select a sorting option:
- Capture date: Sorts photos by the date they were taken.
- Import date: Sorts photos by the date they were added to Lightroom.
- Modified date: Sorts photos by the most recent edits.
- File name: Sorts photos alphabetically.
- Star rating: Sorts photos by rating level.
Select Reverse Order to flip the sort direction from ascending to descending or vice versa.
Segment photos in the grid
In the grid view, select the More icon > Segmentation.
Select a segmentation option:
- None: Display a flat grid without grouping.
- By Year: to group photos into yearly sections.
- By month: Organizes photos by month and year.
- By day: Groups photos by day.
- By hour: Segments photos by hour of capture.
- File type: Separates photos by format.
- Flag: Groups photos by pick or reject status.
- Star rating: Organizes photos by rating level.
Sort photos in All photos grid view
In the Lightroom tab, select the albums view drop-down menu, and then select All photos.
Select the Options menu.
In the grid view, select Sort .
In the SORT BY menu that appears, select a sorting option:
- Capture Date: Sorts photos by the date they were taken.
- Import Date: Sorts photos by the date they were added to Lightroom.
- Modified Date: Sorts photos by the most recent edits.
Select Reverse Order to flip the sort direction from ascending to descending or vice versa.
Sort photos in album grid view
In the Lightroom tab, select the albums view drop-down menu.
Scroll to Your albums, and then select the album you want to sort.
Select the Options menu.
In the SORT BY menu that appears, select a sorting option:
- Capture Date: Sorts photos by the date they were taken.
- Import Date: Sorts photos by the date they were added to Lightroom.
- Modified Date: Sorts photos by the most recent edits.
- File name: Sorts photos alphabetically.
- Star rating: Sorts photos by rating level.
- Custom Order: Allows sorting photos manually by dragging and arranging them as desired.
Select Reverse Order to flip the sort direction from ascending to descending or vice versa.
To sort images in search results, select the Sort icon to arrange the search results, as per Relevancy or Capture Date.
Segment photos in the grid
In the Lightroom tab, select an option from the albums view drop-down menu.
Select the Options menu, and then select a grid view option:
- Square grid: Displays photos in evenly sized square thumbnails for a consistent layout.
- Justified grid: Displays photos in varying sizes while maintaining aspect ratio for a more dynamic layout.
From the BATCH EDIT menu that appears, toggle on Grid segmentation.
Select Segment by and select one of the following options:
- None: Display a flat grid without grouping.
- Year: Group photos into yearly sections.
- Month: Organize photos by month and year.
- Day: Group photos by day.
- Hour: Segment photos by hour of capture.
When segmentation is active, headers appear in the grid view to mark each group. Scroll through the grid to navigate between segments. You can change sorting or segmentation order at any time.
