Get started

Create a complex image or scene from scratch on a blank canvas by writing detailed descriptions, including desired colors, mood, lighting, and style, to produce better results and help guide the creative process toward your vision.

With the new Generate Image feature, you can generate an entire scene using descriptive text prompts and additional creative controls. Create custom images and composites or combine multiple generations together to ideate and refine concepts quickly.

Use Generate Image to create illustrations for books and magazines, posters, flyers, mood boards, or even product mockups by turning your text prompts into images.

A curated inspiration gallery of Firefly-powered user-generated content and corresponding prompts also appear within the Generate Image window. Use this gallery to spark new ideas, remix the examples, or as a starting point for your own artwork so you never get stuck when creating.

How to use Generate Image

Select Generate Image in the Contextual Task Bar that appears on a blank canvas. You could also navigate to Edit > Generate Image or the Tools panel.
The Generate Image feature window opens to display a text prompt box, inspiration gallery you can use as is or edit further, and other creative controls to help you generate an image from scratch.

Use descriptive prompts when using Generate Image to generate an entire scene and not just fill a specific selection.
Refine your generation and explore new styles by selecting the Content type (Photo or Art) and Style Effects to apply to your image.
Enter a descriptive prompt and select Generate . A new generative layer is created, and three variations appear in the Properties panel, which you can also view on canvas from the Contextual Task Bar.

Select Generate again to generate more variations, if necessary.
Navigate to Content type in the Contextual Task Bar or the Properties panel to adjust the style and effects after generating, if necessary.

Generate variations with Reference Image

Upload a reference image to help Photoshop generate more relevant and customized variations. Pairing the image with descriptive text prompts gives you greater control over your generated results.

Use the Reference Image feature, available as part of the Generate Image workflow, to upload an image that helps influence the style of the image. This feature is most useful when you want to discover new aesthetics, and specific styles or details become hard to describe.

Follow these steps to generate variations using the Reference Image feature:

Select the Generate Image button in the Contextual Task Bar or the Tools panel. The Generate Image dialog appears.
View the generated output on canvas, following up with selecting the Reference Image icon in the Contextual Task Bar that appears or from the Properties panel to upload your desired image.

Pair this image with descriptive text prompts, if necessary.
You can also choose from options in the Reference Image gallery in case you don’t have a reference image, and then select Generate to see variations that appear in the Properties panel.

A blue tick appears when the reference image is successfully uploaded and you can view its thumbnail in the Properties panel.

Get more variations of similar style with Generate Similar

Generate Similar allows you to use a generated variation as a reference image and produce more variations with similar content and style. This enhances the accuracy and relevancy of your generated outputs and empowers you to generate similar variations until you land on one you like.

Use Generate Similar, available as part of the Generate Image workflow, to iterate and generate similar variations based on an existing one.

Follow these steps to generate variations using Generate Image:

Generate a desired image using the Generate Image feature.
Select your preferred variation and then the Generate Similar icon from the Contextual Task Bar or the three-dots icon in the Variations panel.
View the generated variations in the Properties panel. Choose the option that matches the selected variation's style or content. You can continue to generate similar variations until you achieve your desired result.
