Cast and accept shadows

Control how 3D objects interact with light and shadows in your composition by configuring their cast and receive shadows properties.

Use Compositing Options of a layer with 3D objects to configure their ability to cast and receive shadows. These properties are valuable tools to define the relationships between 3D objects in your composition and how they interact with light and shadows.

Before you begin:

Create a new composition, import 3D models, and add an environmental light.

  1. In the Timeline panel, select the layer with 3D objects whose shadow properties you want to configure.

  2. Twirl open the properties and select Composition Settings to view the Casts Shadows and Accepts Shadows options.

  3. For the Casts Shadows properties, configure it by specifying the following parameters:

    • On: When you turn on the Casts Shadows option, the 3D models in the layer will cast shadows based on the environment light source in the composition.
The Casts Shadows under the Compositing Options of a layer with a 3D model is turned on.
Turning on Casts Shadows under Compositing Options enables the 3D models in the layer to cast shadows.

    • Off: When you turn off the Casts Shadows option, the 3D models in the layer will not cast any shadows.
The Casts Shadows under the Compositing Options of a layer with a 3D model is turned off.
Set all 3D objects in a layer to not cast shadows by turning off Casts Shadows under Compositing Options.

    • Only: When you specify Only, the 3D models in the layer will not be visible but will still cast shadows.
The Casts Shadows under the Compositing Options of a layer with a 3D model is specified as Only to hide the 3D object but still allowing it to cast shadows.
Specify the Casts Shadows option as Only to hide the 3D object in the layer but still allow it to cast shadows.

  4. For the Accepts Shadows properties, configure it by specifying the following parameters:

    • On: When you turn the Accepts Shadows option On, the 3D models in the layer will accept shadows from the assets that have Casts Shadows enabled.
The Accepts Shadows under the Compositing Options of a layer with a 3D model is turned on to allow shadows from other 3D objects with Cast Shadows turned on.
Turn Accepts Shadows on to allow receiving shadows from other 3D objects with the Casts Shadows property turned on.

    • Off: When you turn the Accepts Shadows option Off, the 3D models in the layer will not accept any shadows from the assets that have Casts Shadows enabled.
The Accepts Shadows under the Compositing Options of a layer with a 3D model is turned off.
Turn Accepts Shadows off if you want the 3D model in the layer to not receive shadows from other 3D objects that have Casts Shadows on.

    • Only - Disabled: Unlike the Casts Shadows, when you specify Only - Disabled, there are no changes in the shadows' behavior in the composition.
  5. Complete the animation workflow and export and render the composition as usual.
