Generative Upscale with Topaz Gigapixel - frequently asked questions

Common questions about using Generative Upscale in Lightroom with Topaz Gigapixel.

For optimal results, we recommend first applying Denoise before running generative upscale. This helps ensure that the uploaded image is cleaner and contains minimal noise. This will lead to the best results.

Additionally, Generative upscale is recommended to be the final step in your editing workflow, as it generates a new file.

Generative upscale returns a DNG file that will be saved separately from the original, regardless of the format of the original image.

Yes, at this time, there is a maximum resolution of 65,000 pixels on the long end for the upscaled photo.

Generative upscale applies denoise and sharpening based on the Topaz Gigapixel’s analysis of the image. However, we recommend running Lightroom’s Denoise first for the best results.

If this happens to your image, we recommend running Denoise edits first and then rerunning the Generative Upscale.

Super Resolution and Generative upscale are both upscale models to improve resolution and recover detail in your image. Our intent in offering both Super Resolution and Topaz Gigapixel in Lightroom is to provide you with multiple tools so you can choose the option that best suits your image. There are a few key differences between the two, outlined below.

Lightroom Super Resolution:

  • Offers 2x upscale only

  • Best options if you’re working with RAW and want to remain in a RAW-first workflow

  • Doesn’t consume generative credits

Generative upscale with Topaz Gigapixel:

  • Upscales 4x as well as 2x

  • Returns a derivative DNG file

  • Consumes generative credits

Yes, Generative upscale works on HDR images.

Yes, you can export generative upscaled images with content credentials. However, they will not reflect the use of Topaz Gigapixel as a third-party model.

We regularly assess where and how new features are introduced across the Lightroom ecosystem and welcome ongoing feedback from our community. At this time, there are no plans to bring Topaz Gigapixel to Lightroom Classic. In Lightroom Classic this year, we are focused on expanding workflows with AI Culling and Firefly integrations for ideation, as well as performance and other enhancements.

Common questions about Generative Credits uages

To confirm whether your plan has access to premium generative features and learn more about generative credits and premium features, read the generative credits FAQ.

If your plan does not include premium generative feature access, we offer limited complimentary generations to try out these features. If you’d like to continue using premium generative features after your complimentary allotment expires or purchase additional generative credits, you can upgrade to the Creative Cloud Pro plan or purchase Firefly monthly credit add-ons.

Generative upscale consumes a different number of credits based on the upscaled file output size. If the chosen scale factor exceeds a model’s limit, reduce the scale factor or resize the image.

  • Topaz Gigapixel (upscaled files up to 25 megapixels) = 10 credits

  • Topaz Gigapixel (upscaled files over 25+ megapixels) = 20 credits
