Learn how to select objects inside the marquee using the Selection tool, without including overlapping objects.
The default marquee selection selects any object that is partially inside the marquee. The enclosed mode allows you to select only objects that are entirely inside the marquee.
Drag a marquee around the objects you want to select.
Press E while dragging to switch to the enclosed mode.
Press E again to switch back to the default selection mode.

With the Selection tool, grouped objects are treated as a single unit, whereas with the Group Selection tool, you can select individual objects, even if they are part of a group.
