Copy, clone, and link form fields

Last updated on Sep 9, 2026

Reuse an existing form field without rebuilding its configuration, and choose whether the new fields should remain independent or share the same value.

In modern Adobe Acrobat Sign authoring, you can copy a field to create an independent field or clone and link it when the same field and value should appear in multiple places.

Choose between copy and clone

The two actions preserve the field's configuration differently.

Action Field name Values Later changes Exported field data
Copy Gets a new unique name Entered separately Independent of the original Each field appears separately
Clone and link Keeps the same name Shared across linked instances Changes are synchronized The linked field appears once

Use Copy when you want another field with the same starting configuration but a different purpose or value.

Use Clone and link fields when the same information should appear in multiple locations. For example, a recipient could enter an address once and have that value appear everywhere the linked field is used.

Copy a field

Copy a field when you want to reuse its configuration while keeping the new field independent.

Select the field you want to copy.

Right-click the field.

Select Copy field.

Position the copied field where needed.

You can also use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V on Windows or Cmd+C and Cmd+V on macOS.

The copied field preserves the original field's configuration but receives a new unique field name. After copying, changes to either field don't affect the other.

Review the new field name and change it when a more descriptive name would make the collected data easier to identify.

See Add and configure form fields for changing field properties.

Clone and link a field

Clone a field when multiple locations should represent the same field and value.

Select the field you want to clone.

Right-click the field.

Select Clone and link fields.

Position the linked field where needed.

The cloned field retains the same field name and configuration as the original.

Linked instances remain synchronized. Changes made to the shared field configuration apply to the linked instances, and a value entered by the recipient is populated across the linked locations.

Copy or clone a field to every page

Use the field menu when the same field placement is needed throughout a multi-page document.

Select the field, then choose:

  • Copy field to all pages to create independent fields on the document pages.
  • Clone field to all pages to create linked instances of the same field.

Choose based on whether recipients should provide a separate value on each page or one value that is shared across all linked instances.

Understand the effect on exported data

The difference between copying and linking continues after the agreement is completed.

Copied fields are independent fields with unique names. Each field is represented separately in exported field data.

Cloned and linked fields represent the same underlying field. Their repeated instances don't create separate columns for each location in exported field data.

This distinction is especially important when agreement data will be used for reporting or downstream processing.

See Form field properties for more information about field names and other field behaviors.

Things to know

  • Copying preserves the field configuration but creates a new field name.
  • Cloning and linking preserves the field name and creates synchronized instances of the same field.
  • A copied field can be edited without changing the original.
  • Editing the shared configuration of a linked field affects its linked instances.
  • Use meaningful names for copied fields when the resulting data will be exported or referenced elsewhere.
