Issue
When you launch a Creative Suite 5 application, the application unexpectedly quits with an error report that is similar to the following:
AppName: [application].exe AppVer: [app version] ModName: updaternotifications.dll ModVer: 1.0.0.64 Offset: 0006a8dc
Solutions
Solution 1: Run the Updater Notifications DLL Replacement Tool
This tool attempts to locate all instances of the affected DLL and replace them with a newer version which eliminates this issue. This tool is only designed to run on Windows XP, and only from a local hard drive. The tool has no user interface or log to indicate its activities. Run the tool, then attempt to launch after the tool automatically quits.
-
Download the file AdobeNotificationsDllFieldReplacementTool.zip.
-
Extract the AdobeNotificationsDllFieldReplacementTool.zip archive to a convenient location, such as your desktop.
-
Double-click the executable file, AdobeNotificationsDllFieldReplacementTool.exe.
-
Wait for the AdobeNotificationsDllFieldReplacementTool.exe to exit, then launch your Adobe CS5 applications.
Solution 2: Install product updates
This issue is addressed in several CS5 product updates. Make sure that you are running the latest update for your Adobe Creative Suite 5 product. Because the applications crash on launch, you can't request updates via the Help menu. Instead, navigate to the updater application directly, and double-click it to launch:
Windows XP 32 bit: %Program Files%\Common Files\Adobe\OOBE\PDApp\Core\PDApp.exe
Windows XP 64 bit: %Program Files (x86)%\Common Files\Adobe\OOBE\PDApp\Core\PDApp.exe
Solution 3: Update the updaternotifications.dll file
If the previous solutions did not work, or if you are using a Creative Suite 5 edition, update the updaternotifications.dll file for each affected application and component.
-
Download the 32-bit updater notifications DLL file and the 64-bit updater notifications DLL file. Save the files to a location on your hard drive that you can remember, such as the desktop.
Note: For 64-bit systems, download both versions of the updater notifications file. -
When the download completes, right-click the .zip file and choose Extract All.
-
Navigate to the existing updaternotifications.dll file for the affected application in one of the following folders:
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CS5
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Bridge CS5
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Device Central CS5
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS5
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Encore CS5
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Fireworks CS5
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash CS5
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS5
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Media Encoder CS5
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe OnLocation CS5
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS5
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Soundbooth CS5
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Contribute CS5\App
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4\plugins\com.adobe.flexide.amt_4.0.0.272416\os\win32\x86
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash Catalyst CS5\plugins\com.adobe.flexide.amt_1.0.0.273393\os\win32\x86
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS5\Support Files\Contents\Windows
NOTE: On 64-bit systems, applications other than After Effects, Photoshop, and Adobe Premiere Pro are installed in the folder Program Files (x86). For all of these applications, install the 32-bit updater notifications file. For applications on 64-bit systems that are installed in the Program Files folder, install the 64-bit version.
-
Rename the file to updaternotifications.dll.old.
-
Drag the new, downloaded updaternotifications.dll file into the folder.
-
Repeat steps 2 - 6 for each affected CS5 application or component.
Additional information
This issue occurs when the user account permissions don't allow for automatic additions of a scheduled task. CS5 applications add scheduled tasks as part of their update notification system.
