Error: "Another instance of updater is running..." | CS5 updates don't install on Windows

Issue

When installing updates for CS5 products or components, the Adobe Application Manager reports, "Some updates failed to install. The following updates were unable to install. If you wish to install these updates, please fix the problems below and retry: [name of update] Another instance of Updater is running. Please try again later."

Solution

 Start the Workstation service.

  1. Choose Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools.
  2. Open Services.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the list and open Workstation.
  4. Ensure that the Startup type is set to Automatic (see 1 in the figure below).
  5. If the Service status does not indicate Started (see 2 in the figure below).
  6. Click Start.
  7. Once the Service status reads Started, click OK, and then retry the update installation.
Workstation Service Properties

NOTE: If you don't see the workstation service, you don't have it installed, choose Start > Network Connections, and open the Properties for your active Local Area Connection and install the Client for Microsoft Networks. The updater should work properly now. If not, check the now visible Workstation service in Administrative Tools > Services and ensure it is started.

Additional Information

When you attempt to install multiple CS5 updates at the same time, the first update is the one reported in the error message. Since the Adobe Bridge updates typically appear first in the list of updates, this error most often occurs with the Adobe Bridge CS5 4.0.2 update. However, if that update is disabled in the list of updates, the next update in the list generates the error.
