Set preferences for working in Lightroom Classic

Last updated on Sep 5, 2024

Learn how to access and modify Lightroom Classic preferences and customize them per your frequent workflows.

You can explore categories such as General, Presets, External Editing, and more within the Preferences dialog box. Each category offers customizable settings, enabling you to adjust interface colors, default preset behavior, external editing preferences, file handling options, performance optimizations, and interface elements. You can enhance Lightroom Classic to suit your needs by fine-tuning these settings, improving efficiency and productivity in your photo editing. You can manually reset your preferences to their default state in Lightroom Classic, ensuring that problematic plug-in preferences or user presets are not loaded.

Note

If you reset your preferences without noting your current catalog's name and location, it can appear that your catalog has disappeared when you restart Lightroom Classic. Before you reset your preferences, refer to Recover catalog and images after resetting preferences, which contains steps to avoid this confusion.

How to set Preferences in Lightroom Classic

  • On Windows, choose Edit > Preferences.
  • On macOS, choose Lightroom Classic > Preferences.

Learn about the preferences that you can set for working in Lightroom Classic:

Settings: Select the checkbox if you want a splash screen during startup.

Default Catalog

You can select the catalog from the drop-down to set the default catalog.

  • Select Load most recent catalog to always use the most recent catalog used in Lightroom.
  • Select Prompt me when starting Lightroom to always show the catalog prompt when Lightroom starts up.

Import Options

Select the checkbox you want for your Import Options preference

  • Show import dialog when a memory card is detected
  •  Select the "Current/Previous Import" collection during import
  • Ignore camera-generated folder names when naming folder
  • Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos

RAW Defaults

You can set default settings for importing raw file format images in Lightroom Classic based on Adobe defaults, camera-specific defaults, or custom presets.

Note

Select the Override global setting for a specific camera checkbox to override the global setting. Read more about how to set up default settings for RAW images.

Visibility

Some presets are partially compatible with the selected photo, as not all Preset settings can be applied to the image. Select the checkbox to allow the partially compatible devices.

Location

If you are working with more than one catalog, you may find that your presets need to be included while working with a particular catalog. This can happen if you have the Store presets with this catalog option selected in the preferences.

By default, the presets and templates that you create in Lightroom Classic and your catalog are stored at different locations within the user account folder path on your computer. To know the default locations on macOS and Windows, see 'Presets and templates' and 'Catalog' locations in Preference file and other file locations | Lightroom Classic.

Caution

When you enable the Store Presets With This Catalog option, Lightroom Classic doesn't copy or move your existing presets and templates within the associated catalog folder. Only the new presets and templates that you subsequently create are stored in the 'Lightroom Classic Settings' folder within the catalog folder. Clicking the Show Lightroom Classic Presets Folder (Preferences dialog > Presets tab) now takes you to the catalog folder on your hard drive instead of the default location.

Any new presets or templates you create after selecting the Store Presets With This Catalog option will be stored in a new folder named 'Lightroom Classic Setting' created within the associated catalog folder.

The advantage of using this option is that the presets and templates are available in Lightroom Classic when you launch the associated catalog on another computer. These presets and templates include Develop presets, Export presets, External Editor presets, Filename presets, Filter presets, FTP presets, Keyword sets, Label sets, Local Adjustment presets, Metadata presets, Print templates, text templates, Watermarks, and Web templates.

Lightroom Defaults

You can restore the Lightroom Classic defaults by selecting the respective buttons:

  • Restore Export Presets
  • Restore Filename Templates
  • Restore Library Filter Presets
  • Restore Auto Layout Presets
  • Restore Keyword Set Presets
  • Restore Text Templates
  • Restore Color Label Presets
  • Restore Text Style Presets
  • Restore Local Adjustment Presets
