Windows | Lightroom doesn't start

Try the solutions in this document to resolve Lightroom launch-related issues on Windows.

Issue

When you try launching Lightroom on your Windows machine, nothing happens.

The Lightroom app shows up in the Windows Task Manager window for a few seconds and then disappears. The Event Viewer on Windows shows the faulting module as MSVCR120.dll.

Solution 1: Install any pending Windows updates

Solution 2: Uninstall and repair MS C++ redistributable packages

On your computer, navigate to Control Panel > Programs And Features. The steps to open the Control Panel differ depending on the Windows version you are using. Learn how to open the Control Panel.

On the Programs And Features screen, uninstall the 2015 and earlier versions of the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable packages.

Uninstall all the 2005, 2008, and 2010 versions of Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable packages
Previous versions of Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable packages.

Once you've uninstalled these packages, download and install the required version from the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable latest supported downloads page, and then restart Lightroom.

If you still face launch-related issues, do the following to repair the version of Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable packages installed on your computer:

  • Go to Control Panel > Programs And Features
  • On the Programs and Features screen, right-click the package and then select Change from the context menu.
  • Select Repair.

Restart your computer and launch the Lightroom app.
