Carlos del Pino shares two contemporary designs you can customize with your own images, text, and color effects.

  1. Change color and message.

Del Pino provided three color effects for the poster’s paper texture background. Toggle the eye icon next to each one to see how it changes the design.

Use the Type tool to change text — Del Pino used the Dystopian typeface from Adobe Fonts, but there are many others to choose from.

Poster design with black paper texture background, image of swimmer appears through black lines, Type icon, and Layers panel.

  2. Choose a new photo.

Add one of your own photos and see how it looks by opening the Photo layer group and dragging it above the swimmer layer.

Experiment with the Transform options in the Edit menu to scale and rotate an image as you place it.

Poster design with black texture background, image of orange cat appears through white lines, Layers panel shows cat photo.

  3. Set the mood.

For an entirely different layout, open Del Pino’s second design. Show the Hue/Saturation layer and double-click the layer icon to open the Properties panel. Drag the sliders to change the color of the spots on this moody book cover.

Book cover has image of woman in profile, the title is “The shadows we understand.” Hue/saturation adjustment on blue spots.

  4. See what happens.

The original image is in black and white. Try adding a color photo and see how it changes the composition. Open the Photo layer group and drag your own photo above the current one in the Layers panel.

In addition to the Hue/Saturation controls, Del Pino added Curves and Black & White adjustment layers. Click each layer’s eye icon to show and hide it and see the impact it makes. Double-click an adjustment layer icon to change the look as you see fit. Layer hierarchy matters. Drag your photo up and down the Layers panel to see how the adjustments affect the final design.

Book cover now has a black and white picture of daisies, the flower photo is highlighted on the Layers panel.
