Temi’s tips on composites.

Be you.

My work showcases people who look like me. My skin color is a gift, it’s powerful — and I want others who look like me to see themselves in my work.

Add color diversity.

I was born into the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria. Bright colors and Ashoke fabric with vivid patterns play a big role in our culture, and I like to weave those themes throughout my work.

Use your voice.

Much of my work reflects the times. From far away, my art can appear one way. As you look closer, you may notice messages and symbols within.

Know your constraints.

I can’t draw — although I plan to learn — so I blend photography, shapes, brushes, and textures to create the look I want.

Work with beauty.

For portrait work, I affirm the beauty that is already there. Freckles and birthmarks are part of someone’s identity. I like to accentuate that with elements of nature and creative color effects.

Keep learning.

I love to teach. I love to learn. I’ve learned a lot from artists such as Magdiel Lopez and I’m inspired by so many more. Always be a student. Put your pride aside to learn.
