There are two possible causes of this error:

  1. You have a high ASCII character in the name of the Mac.

For example, a computer name of "Bob&Gina" may cause this error. In this case the ampersand is the problem.

To find the name of your computer read "What's my computer's name and address?" at

Note: The OS X computer name is not the same as the name of your internal hard drive.

  2. The XML information sent from your machine to the Adobe activation server has been received but is damaged in some way. This information exchange is necessary to authorize your copy of Adobe Digital Editions.

Do one of the following solutions to resolve the issue:

  1. Check the name of your computer for any type of high ASCII character.

If you find one, changing the computer name to remove that character should resolve the error in Adobe Digital Editions.
  2. Ensure that a firewall or proxy server is not catching the necessary header exchange between the Adobe activation server and your machine. To see the necessary headers, read "Error: "Adobe DRM Error" when you activate Digital Editions or access an eBook" (TechNote kb402747).
