  1. Load your photo

Open the file in Photoshop and add an empty layer above it by hitting the + icon in the Layers panel. Name the new layer “Spot Healing Brush Edit”. You’ll do your editing in the blank layer so that that the original image stays intact. Now zoom in (command and +) on the two crumbs in the middle of the taco display.

The Spot Healing Brush Edit layer is selected and the add layer icon, located in the bottom of the Layers panel, is highlighted.

  2. Grab your Spot Healing Brush.

Select the Spot Healing Brush from the Tools panel. In the Options bar, set the Mode to Normal, the Type to Content Aware, and check the Sample All Layers box to ensure that edits made in the blank layer affect the photo layer.

The brush tip should be just a bit bigger than the object. To adjust the brush settings, click the brush options dropdown menu in the Options bar. For the crumbs we suggest a brush size of 100, a Hardness of 100%, and Spacing of 1%.

TIP: You can use the left bracket ([) to quickly shrink the brush size, and the right bracket (]) to enlarge it.

The Spot Healing Tool icon, which is a bandaid, is shown and the Content Aware and Sample All Layers options are highlighted in the Options bar.

  3. Click and remove.

Hover your brush over the crumbs and click. They should disappear and be filled in with the yellow background. When an object casts a shadow, like these crumbs, it’s a good idea to make sure your brush encompasses it, too. It may leave a little smudge behind that’s a bit darker than the rest of the background, which you can also remove with the brush. Fine-tune your edit until it looks the way you want then repeat these steps on the crumb in the right corner.

TIP: Use the Eraser tool to undo and refine Spot Healing Brush strokes.

One of two taco meat crumbs is covered by the round, grey brush tip of the Spot Healing Brush in a before image, and is removed in an after image.

  4. Click (and drag) and remove.

Use the same techniques to remove the cheese and lettuce, but instead of clicking once, click and drag the brush across the objects, painting them over.

Release and watch them vanish into the background like the crumbs.

TIP: If the edges around the object you’ve removed look too obvious, undo your edit (command + z) then turn down the Hardness in the brush options drop down menu to soften them and try again.

A clump of shredded cheese on the counter is painted out with the Spot Healing Brush in a before image, and is removed in an after image.
