Global Creator: Ray Dak Lam.

  1. Work layer by layer.

Ray creates his geometric designs in Illustrator and then exports them to Photoshop so that each shape is on its own layer.

Start by choosing the Move tool. Enable Auto-Select Layer and click the blue rectangle at the top of the composition. Or, choose the Practice layer in the Layers panel.

Move tool and Auto-Select option is upper left, the layers panel is to the right. A portion of Ray’s composition is behind.

  2. Keep things contained.

Before adding texture to his work, Ray uses clipping masks. That way, any texture he brushes on stays within a specific area of the shape.

Create a new layer above the Practice shape. Then, right-click the new layer and choose Create Clipping Mask.

A new layer is above the Practice layer with Create Clipping Mask selected in the Layers panel in front of Ray’s composition.

  3. Add some texture.

Grab a brush, pick a color, and start brushing on texture. Ray used Kyle Webster’s Spatter Brushes - Pressure Control 1 brush for this design.

You can download the Spatter brush pack, then drag the .ABR file into Photoshop to add it to your Brushes panel (Window > Brushes). Or, choose Import Brushes from the Brushes panel flyout menu.

The Brush tool is set to light pink. The Brushes panel shows a spatter brush and a pink texture accents a blue rectangle.
