Recolor patterns for your product mockups.

Ashley Fouyolle recolors her work in Adobe Illustrator and then brings it into Adobe Photoshop to design bold, cheerful gift wrap.

  1. Recolor a pattern.

In Illustrator, open the Libraries panel (Window > Libraries). Select the UNWRP Patterns library, available at the top of this page, and double-click a pattern swatch to open it in a new document. Select the pattern with the Selection tool (Ashley chose UNWRP Pattern 4).

Choose Edit > Edit Colors > Recolor Artwork and drag the handles to experiment with color combinations. Use the large handle to set the overall color theme and the small handles to change individual colors. Then click on the artboard to set the changes when you’re done.

Pro tip: Use Generative Recolor (Edit > Edit Colors > Generative Recolor) to change colors using text prompts or presets.

  2. Make a new swatch.

Select the pattern, choose Object > Pattern > Make, and click OK in the pop-up message.

In the Pattern Options panel, rename your pattern. Ashley used the default settings, but feel free to experiment with them to see how they affect the layout. Click Done to save the new pattern to the Swatches panel (Window > Swatches).

To add a pattern to a library, drag it from the Swatches panel to the canvas, and then drag it to the library. Double-click the swatch name in the library to rename it.

Pro tip: Double-click a swatch pattern in the Swatches panel to edit a pattern.

  3. Prep your mockup.

In Photoshop, prepare your pattern so it can be applied to a product mockup. To start, create a new file (File > New). Set the Width and Height to 596x479 pixels, the Resolution to 150 pixels/inch, and click Create. Open the Libraries panel and select the UNWRP Patterns library.

Drag your new pattern from the library to the artboard and press Enter or Return to place it. Use Control+A (Windows) or Command+A (macOS) to select the pattern, choose Edit > Define Pattern, rename it, and click OK.

  4. Add your design.

From the Libraries panel, double-click the thumbnail for the UNWRP mockup Ashley provided. This includes Smart Object layers for you to add a custom design. In the Layers panel, open the Wrapping Paper Design folder. Then double-click the thumbnail on the Wrap 1 layer to open the Smart Object in a separate tab.

Choose Edit > Fill, set the Contents to Pattern, choose the UNWRP pattern you defined in the previous step, and click OK to fill the layer with the pattern. Save your changes to have the Smart Object fill the mockup with the pattern. Then close the tab to return to the mockup file.

  5. Show it off.

Try new patterns in your mockups to showcase your work. Then choose File > Export > Export as and select JPG as the format when you’re ready to share.
