Dimension CC is a design tool which provides access to high-quality 3D models, built from ground-up, for graphic designers. Dimension allows you to use graphics in many ways; by applying them to models, as background images, and even as environment lighting. This article covers the supported types of image formats and some requirements for different applications.

Where to find images?

Images can be created in various ways, from capturing photographs with a camera or phone to creating illustrations in Photoshop or Illustrator. Dimension does not have built-in image creation tools. You can create your own images using other tools, get them from colleagues or clients, or purchase them from a stock service or a website, and import them. Here are some recommended resources:

  • Dimension CC:  The application ships with several backgrounds, textures, and labels which can be used in your projects.  These models are royalty free and can be used for commercial projects. For more details, see Download Dimension CC.
  • Adobe Stock:  Browse millions of images, curated for appearance and quality, and optimized for use in Dimension CC. For more details, see Browse images on Adobe Stock.
  • Photoshop CC and Illustrator CC:  Create your own graphics and illustrations using industry standard design software. For more details, see Download Adobe CC applications.
  • Other Sources:  Import your own images in many common formats.

Using images in Dimension

There are many ways to use images in Dimension. You can use images as a graphic layer, material texture, background, or light.

Material & graphic layers

You can use images by applying them to models in multiple ways. Graphics can be added as their own layer or as a part of an existing material.

Images of wood and marble are used as material textures and a graphic logo is added to a model.

Backgrounds

Images can be added as a static background in a 3D scene. To speed up compositing workflows, take advantage of Match Image and automatically align the 3D scene with the background image. The images used must have a minimum size of 300 pixels (width) by 184 pixels (height) to work with the Match Image feature.

Lights

You can add any image to the Environment Light image swatch to have Dimension automatically convert the image to a 360° lighting environment. It is recommended to use a high-dynamic range (HDR) image when using an image as environment light, however, you can work with any image.

Accessing artboards

Both Photoshop (.PSD) and Illustrator (.AI) files can contain multiple artboards with distinct graphics. Dimension supports reading artboards from both .PSD and .AI. To access artboards in Dimension, do the following:

  1. Create a Photoshop or an Illustrator file with multiple artboards and save the file.

  2. Add the .PSD or .AI file with artboards to Dimension as a graphic, material texture, background, or light.

  3. In the Properties panel, click the image swatch for the image you want to change.

  4. In the image picker, change the selected artboard. The art used in the scene gets updated according to the newly selected art.
