The use of SSDs are recommended, however, for SATA/e-SATA devices, the recommended drive speed is 10000 RPM or above. Adobe doesn't recommend disk drives connected via USB for use with Adobe Premiere Elements.
Similarly, Adobe recommends caution when using drives connected via FireWire. Multiple devices on a single FireWire chain, or multiple devices on a single FireWire card can introduce performance issues, especially with HD video. If you do use external drives, make sure that the cables can handle the drives' data rates and rotational speeds.
Ensure that you have installed the manufacturer's latest drivers, specifically for your display, audio, and storage. Premiere Elements’ usage of the display drivers could be for specific acceleration in some workflows or only for display. In either case, a bad driver can easily make the experience very poor. If the display driver software allows for selective application acceleration, Adobe Premiere Elements should be enabled to use that.
Specifically, the Intel display drivers are used in Premiere Elements 13 and Premiere Elements 14 for acceleration during rendering, export, and playback. It is therefore imperative that the driver be updated and functioning correctly for basic use in Premiere Elements. The options to turn this off and their exact usage are mentioned in the respective Help documentation.
Premiere Elements has multiple network communication needs. Some of them are optional (like Content Download), while some are mandatory (like signing in). If the firewall software allows for selective applications to be exempted from scrutiny, Premiere Elements should be in that list. The best network experience is when the firewall software is temporarily turned off.
Quit Adobe Premiere Elements and then remove any startup items and services that aren't related to your work in Premiere Elements.
To disable startup items and non-Microsoft services, do the following:
- Quit all applications.
- Choose Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then click OK. If you are asked for permission to continue, click Continue.
- Click the Startup tab, and select Disable All.
- Select any startup items that are essential for your work. If you are not sure whether an item is essential, leave it deselected (disabled).
- Click the Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services.
- Select Disable All, then reselect any services that are essential for testing the problem.
- Click OK, and restart Windows for the changes to take effect.
Note: Upon restart, you are notified that the System Configuration utility has changed the way that Windows starts up. Click OK. When the System Configuration utility appears, click Cancel.
- Right-click to close or disable any items in the Notification Area (called the System Tray in earlier versions of Windows). Disable any startup items that are still active.
Virtual memory enables the system to use hard disk space to store information that is normally stored in the RAM. Windows manages virtual memory using a paging file. To improve the performance of Adobe Premiere Elements, adjust the size of the paging file to a maximum of twice the amount of installed RAM.
To adjust the size of the virtual memory paging file, do the following:
- Log in to the system as an administrator.
- Quit all applications.
- Choose Start > Control Panel.
- Select System And Maintenance.
- Select System.
- In the left pane, click Advanced system settings. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
- In the Performance section, select Settings, and then click the Advanced tab.
- In the Virtual Memory section, click Change.
- Deselect Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.
- From the Drive list, select a hard disk that has available space equal to at least twice the amount of the installed RAM on your computer. For example, if your computer has 1 GB of RAM, select a hard disk that has at least 2 GB of free space.
- Select the Custom size: option.
- Enter an Initial Size equal to twice the amount of RAM installed on your computer(that is, 4096 for a system with 2 GB of RAM. 1 GB = 1024 MB.)
- In the Maximum Size box, enter the same amount.
- Close the System Properties Window
- Click Set, and then click OK.
- Click OK on the System Properties dialog box.
- Click OK on the Performance Options dialog box.
- Click OK on the System Properties Window.
- Click Restart to restart the system.
Media cache is a set of temporary files generated by certain Adobe applications for use within them. The Media cache folder can bloat up in size over time and can take up a lot of hard disk space. The files are located at the following location on:
MAC: ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common
Deleting these files can free up space. These files are re-generated when needed again, so there is no data loss on deleting.
